Snow drifts could easily be that deep.  Just a few minutes ago, an avalanche warning was issued for the Taos Ski Valley.  Lots of brand new snow on top of old, unstable snow.  People were warned to stay off back roads on foot or in vehicles.

Is it a trap?

I would worry some innocent person or animal would fall into it.

@ECBG    Thanks for the concern, but heavens no.  They get snow like that high in the mountains.

There are sometimes deep holes formed around the trunks of trees.  People have died falling into those wells.

It sure is.  The picture was taken at a ski resort in Utah.  We've had a lot of snow this year.

Buffalo, New York.  Remember, they got 6 feet of snow in December.
