Re: How to answer this question---

I still laugh about the year I asked my son for a new toilet seat.  It's all I needed at the time.

@wagirl   When my adult children ask what they can gift me, I usually say "I'd love spending some time with you"....either just the two of having dinner out, cook home and just have "TIME" together.

***My DS (52) lives 1/2 hr. away and always see him as package deal w/ GDs and DIL. My DD (51) lives in Seattle, but will be here in March and we'll plan a nice lunch out, a mall day shopping, museum hopping, etc.

Re: How to answer this question---

@Isobel Archer --I asked to see what others would have said----plain and simple----just wondering.  And why shouldn't I mention that my answer was the right one for me and that I stood by it??? I guess I don't understand your point .

@Mom2Dogs --I had a good friend for over 30 years--she moved to AZ and up until just a few years ago, we exchanged xmas gifts as well as b-day----that was fun----I don't mind getting gifts--I'd rather give them tho.

Re: How to answer this question---

I agree. Time is what I want.  Either out for a meal, talking and walking on the beach, helping with a project.  Just your time.

We are retired. We have more than we could ever want.  During the year if we see something we want we get it. Save your money, give us your time. That is the best present.

Re: How to answer this question---

I think that was terribly selfish, even mean thing to say to your son.  Gifts are not charity.  They are not about what we need.  Perhaps you don't want a gift from but did you think that he NEEDS to give a holiday to the mother he loves?   I can buy whatever I want and I do but there are still things I love and want.  Even billionaires appreciate gifts.  My two daughters and my nephew always ask me what I want for Christmas and also for my birthday.  So I give them some ideas to select from.  Last Christmas I told my girls exactly what I wanted and they went in on it together.   An electric cup cake/muffin maker.  Giving someone you love a gift makes some people happy.

Well I guess that really answers the question for your son.  If he's stupid enough to think you'd like jewelry instead of asking - and getting you - what you want, you will just take it back and get what you want.

So even though he is apparently smart enough to ask, when you say "nothing" he now knows if he makes a mistake, you will rectify it.  Geat gifting dynamics going on there.

How do you gift others by the way - or do you?

@Isobel Archer ---Can I ask why you are being kind of nasty??? First --I was speaking about my EX-- not my son-- regarding the sink incident!!! You need to read the post!!! And seriously--how dare you insult my son!!!  Move on and spread your nastiness elsewhere--
