Sams club has scan and go, you scan with your phone and show the receipt on your phone at the door, it is a great time saver.  They also have self checkout with a wand so you can leave everything in your cart.

You can't use either of these if you purchase alcohol.  There are always at least two or more registers open also.

@spumoni99  that's how we do it at Sams.

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

I feel the stores can offer both services. I'm sure the younger generation (I'm 70) doesn't mind doing their own and people with only a few items find it faster. I like the personal involvement of a friendly cashier and the feeling that the store values my business enough to offer someone to check me out and bag my purchases. BTW my store still has the bagger take your cart and load your groceries into your car!

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

I love self-check-out (SCO).  In fact, I haven't visited a manned lane in years.  I should note however that I rarely have more than ten or fifteen items.

Delaware ShopRites converted to 100% SCO about a year ago.  Customers complained and the stores' owner recently announced they would be reverting to the past.  They said "we listened" but skeptics said they were experiencing higher than normal losses.  So ... there is hope for those of you who like manned checkouts.

@Imaoldhippie If there was a gas station near me that offered the option of someone else pumping my gas for me, then I would gladly go out of my way to drive there and pay more for the service.  I absolutely hate pumping my own gas and having that smell all over me!  Maybe customer service will make a comeback someday!

@rissajaneen  when I lived in NJ my gas was pumped and my windshield was cleaned. Moved to Fl and was shocked that it was not done there but of course I knew how to do it.

There are also full service gas station that will pump your gas for you but of course it will cost you. So you have a choice.

I love self check-out stores. I ALWAYS use them. I can avoid listening to people in front of me chit chat with an employee. I also don't have to listen to IDIOTS talking on their phones.

I shop at Kroger and they have many cashiers to check out your groceries. Once in a great while I will use a self checkout if I have a few items. I found the people watching the self checkout were very helpful.

@elated  don't know if Kroger has done this to your Store but we now have 2 self checkouts with conveyor belts in case you have a full cart of groceries. Customers like it. Of course we still have the single self checkouts and cashiers. I have always used self checkout where ever I shop.

Or the ones who never have their card ready or have to dig for change. OMG it drives me nuts.

The other day I was on my way to work and decided to get a Starby's. I use Mobile ordering and will run in if the line is long. This day, there was one car ahead of me. I guess she knew the baristas because I had to sit in line behind her for several minutes while they chit chatted. She already had her coffee and they were just chatting away.

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

There is a large store in my area that has shut down and will be removing the self checkouts.  The manager said they had to hire more people to watch people checking out and the theft rate was just too high.  they are working on configuring the front end to add more cashiers.

I know I don't get out much - but ....are grocery store 'self check outs' going to take over?  I was in a major chain type grocery store this morning around 10 a.m., haven't been there in a long time to that particular store - and I had about 10 or 12 things in my cart .  When I got up front to pay, I looked around and there was no cashier !  The only way to purchase your items was by the 'self check out'.  I asked the attendant close by if there was a register open somewhere, maybe I'd just missed seeing it...but she said no, we don't have a register running right now, just self check out.  Well, the devil got in me, I know !  I just smiled and told her I wouldn't be purchasing anything, left the buggy with her and went on my merry way.  Is this the way of the world now?

@sarahpanda

The devil got in you?   That must be a regional saying; never heard it before.

I didn't think I'd like the self checkouts, but if I only have a few things and the people in line have full carts to check out, I won't wait.

I check myself out now and never have to worry about the bagger bruising my carefully-selected apples.

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

Yes, self checkout is everywhere.  I don't like it and I tend to shop where they don't have it or there are full service checkouts available.  I would have done exactly what you did.  I think that clerk was nearby because she was supposed to help customers like you.
