@speedy girl  We use ours without the camera. We don’t see them and they don’t see us unless we want to show them something.

I use facetime a lot.  it's the only way I get to see my son, his wife, and my grands (they live far away).  Before I retired, I would use it occasionally when working from home for some meetings. Otherwise work used webinar and such.

My children live out of state.  We use it to see and converse with them and our grandchildren.  It works great for us.
