@Sooner

We really don't know what the husband's advice on this what .  Remember we are talking to the mother of a grown woman who is now  whining because she made the mistake of loaning money she didn't really have.   If her husband advised against the loan, she's not going tell her mother.  Still...  This is not 1924.  The husband is not responsible for his wife's actions.  She didn't loan his money, she loaned HER money.  And she had every right to that.   And her husband is doing the absolute right thing by staying as far away from this fiasco as possible.  This isn't just a loan, this is family.  And the recipient of the loan was 21 years old.  While some people think fracturing a family for $800 is worth it, it's likely that does not see it that way.   I think some people are blaming the husband because he's a man.  And they believe as man, he should have "controlled his woman".

I would ask the niece for the loan and not ask again. I would not loan her anymore money.

I thought I read somewhere that they came to an agreement. If the agreement is kept, then it will be over.

@pdlinda   I forgot. But did you know you can claim unpaid debts on your Federal Taxes. ?   I had loaned a friend 5,000 bux, this was back in 1989 ,after which I learned my lesson. That amount was to be paid back in a few weeks.  Anyway, fast forward a few years, my CPA ASKED ABOIT INPAID LOANS OR BALANCES THAT COULD NOT BE COLLECTED.   bingo, did I have instant recall.  Anyway he deducted 2500 a yr for 2 years for 2 years off our taxes. I had proof. I actually had wired the money.  There was a fee, and I got that too.  Tell her document all receipts.  You don't even have to say who it is you loaned to, especially for the amount she loaned. But, tell her any amount they don't pay, tell  CPA.  There is a place on forms if you do taxes yourself
