@Puppy Galore That must have been very scary for you! I'm glad things turned out okay.
I live on a quiet cul de sac and know all of my neighbors. I also know that they are all good people and if I were in real danger or distress I could go up to any of their doors to seek help. Of course I hope it never comes to that!
I always take my phone with me just to walk to the end of the driveway and the mailbox if I forgot to earlier in the day and it is now later in the evening even with DH at home. He's usually in the basement and might not hear.
From now on you know that you will ALWAYS step outdoors with both your cell phone and a house key!

@Puppy Galore Impressive background too, it's obviously served you well. Your instincts are good and they kicked in when you needed them to. Your comment, "this old tea bag isn't ready to quit yet" LMAO If I make it to that age, I can only hope I have half your moxie!

Glad you made it back okay!
I have actually been locked out of my home TWICE by my dogs standing up to look at me out the back door and hitting the lock closed. No phone, no coat, nothing. All windows and doors were closed and securely locked.
I have a lot of neighbors, but I felt too foolish to ask them to call my husband at his job.
I had to wait outside for dear hubby to return from work for multiple hours. One time was a bit chilly! It was a good thing he was not away for a longer time.
I have learned my lesson--I definitely have a house key hidden on my property!

@Puppy Galore. A small mistake like that can end tragically for us seniors. For you and anyone else that gets into a pickle, don't hesitate to call your local fire department in case of such an emergency, in your case perhaps from a neighbor's phone.
Part of fire department's title is "rescue". That's what they're paid for and trained to do. I had to do that when a friend fell off her mobility scooter and neither of us could get her up. I called 911 and explained we needed help but nobody was injured so no sirens. They arrived in minutes and were so kind. They had her up and on a chair with no effort at all.
Never hesitate to call your local fire and RESCUE.

What an awful experience! I would have cried too and you should be so proud that you did what you had to do to find a way home for you and your sweet dog.
I just wanted to add one more thing that might help.
A few months? ago, there was a thread here about life alert type things. A lot of suggestions but a few mentioned an Apple Watch, something I never would have thought I'd want.
I had looked up a lot of the senior life alert type things but just found a lot of negative reviews, like not always reliable.
I don't intend to fall but I did once when the tall ladder I was on all of a sudden fell over with me in it. It wasn't good. I don't know how I crawled to my phone but I did.
So this apple watch I got from Walmart-a little over $100, and I got a stretch band in pearls to make it easier than the silicone band it came with. I don't use any of the notifications other than if I fall it will call emergency services if I don't answer. Will also call my emergency contacts.
I love it! No contracts and it shows the time, the date and you can chose a pretty picture that also shows the weather situation.
I hope you have a very snuggly warm evening with your super pup and also that you find a new home that you love and also
that you never have to lug one of those dumb trash cans again!
p.s.-I did have one of my son- in laws set it up for me because reading instructions for new technology also makes me cry!

YES to the Fire Department. Years ago, there was a broken water pipe in the apartment above me. The apt manager was not home, and neither was the tenant.
My apartment below was flooded, and the ceiling was actually sagging. I called the Fire Department to cut the water supply off entirely. di

My dear friend passed away a year ago. She was widowed and had a sweet little dog. It was just the two of them so she found a friend who agreed to adopt the pup if anything happened to her. Unfortunately she did pass away rather suddenly and little Zydeco was immediately taken in by the friend. It might give you peace of mind to find a friend or relative who would agree to something similar. And congratulations on your perserverence and ingenuity.
