Never.  They are putting people out of jobs.

Re: Do You Use Self Checkout At Stores?

One grocery chain in my area discontinued it and now have cashiers for short orders.  I believe theft was the reason.

Re: Do You Use Self Checkout At Stores?

I do at WM, just a few items i don't do a big food order at WM.  WM self-checks are good.

Stop&Shop has put more self-checks in now. After their strike they eliminated jobs. the store is just a couple miles from me but i can't stand Shop&Shop -  they are the laziest workers, they are union and all have an attitude . their self-checks have a distracting computer voice instructing.  and if there is any slight variance it calls for a supervisor.

BJs has gone to self-checks, horrible. you have to check-out yourself and you must pay for the privilege of shopping there!       i don't want to put clothing items on the dirty belt with chicken and meat  residue  but the system voids the item if you put it in the cart.  there is no one to assist.

Re: Do You Use Self Checkout At Stores?

99% of the time I'll head to a self-checkout.  The only times I go to a regular checkout line is if I have a full cart.  I just wish the self-checkout areas had more room to bag items.

I went into a McD's last week - it was not busy at all - I went up to the counter to order, and the cashier directed me to use the touchscreen display in the lobby area to place my order.  I thought that was strange but I did it, it was easy.

I'm not convinced any jobs are being phased out.  I just don't know the statistics.

I used it once several years ago at Meijer and that was the first and last time.  The machine kept yelling at me that I had put things in my cart and hadn't scanned them yet or something like that.  I was obviously doing something wrong but couldn't figure out what.  I left embarrassed, frustrated and with high blood pressure.  I'm sure once I got the hang of it, it would be fine but I have zero interest in figuring it all out.  Besides, on my grocery shopping days, I get up early and go before the stores are crowded

There was a period of time when I would have a problem at the Meijer checkout every single time.  If my DH was with me he would walk away.  The attendent admitted that there was a problem with the register one day.  They have since improved the software and I haven't had issues in a while.  Watched I've jinxed myself and now I'm going to have issues next time.

Sometimes I do at Walmart. Twice I have at Kroger. Walmart has such long lines at times that move super slow and if I am in a hurry I do use the self checkout but dont care much for it!

Hello.I never use self checkout because i do believe people are losing jobs because of this. I mean i can do it but, i don't want people losing jobs because of it.. I heard Costco is going to start this..

Yes, I always do, for all the reasons given.  I won't belabor the point by repeating them.  I even wrote to Wegmans once, saying four self-checkouts wasn't enough and suggesting they be reserved for small orders, say no more than 15 items.

Re: Do You Use Self Checkout At Stores?

I love self checkout but I wish grocery stores would have people limit stay under maybe 20 items. Nothing worse than getting to my store where there's only 4 of them and each one has a cart overflowing  They don't seem to be set up well for that amount of stuff and maybe it's just when I'm there but the people with the cartful are confused. At the very least people should use the the first few times with small orders until they get comfortable.

Of the three groceries here two have self checkout. The one that doesn't is the worst for getting out of. Never enough lanes open and only one express if that. If express isn't open I'm not a happy customer. And then to see managers walking around while there are lines! Oh boy as someone that used to work in retail that really gets me. Managers trying not to make eye contact so they don't have to work a register is ridiculous.
