@Foxxee   When I was in grade school, Mom took me to Woolworth's on Sat. for lunch. Turkey dinner with all the sides was my favorite and we shared an apple dumpling for dessert. YUM!   The store was downtown...a far trek from where we lived, but worth (lol) every extra mile.

@Shanus   Oh I loved those apple dumplings!!   As I remember they were only offered in the fall .

Sure did. Would go shopping with my mom and always have lunch at the Woolworth counter. Brings back pleasant memories.

OMGoodness, yes!   Did the same with my mom.  My mom would always order a chocolate phosphate.  I usually had a BLT or tuna on toast.  Those are some of the best memories for me!   We also bought our parakeets at Woolworths.  I remember they would put the parakeet in a box with holes and we would bring it home with us on the bus.  Memories!!!

@Reva  When I was probably 6 my dad would take me to get one of those painted turtles !  I had completely forgotten about that ....great memory !

Re: Did You Ever Eat At Woolworths?

In Kansas City we had a Woolworth's at the Mall. The bus actually stopped in front of our house and we took it to the mall. I think I was 15. I know I bought my makeup there, pancake makeup and light pink lipstick!

The first time I ate at the counter I sat next to a man who smoked a cigar and it was terrible, my food tasted like it.

Years later I sat with my ex who liked to embarrass me and he did.

We had a place close by that was Skaggs, Osco and several names over the years that had a counter too.

We also had a store called the Five and Dime. Penny candy.

Re: Did You Ever Eat At Woolworths?

Oh yes, many times. I lived in the country and Woolworth's was the first place we'd go to when in town. Does anyone remember the Photo Booth?  What fun that was.

I purchased my very first bra, sweater & signiture ring there for less than $5.00 which was a lot of money then.  Went directly to the photo booth with my best friend and we took pictures together.  We were trying to show off our tops and rings. We still have the pictures and have been best of friends for over 60 years.

My friend and I both worked there years later as waitresses. Oh what fun we had.  All the customers were great. It just seemed like most eveyone was pleasant back then. I remember the very first chocolate malt I made. I went to take it off the machine and the metal container hit the counter, bounced several times and there was chocolate malt all over the place including on several customers.  I was so embarrassed and afraid and felt like I was in a slow motion dream inside of a snow globe. I felt frozen in time, and had no choice but to turn around to see who the malt flew on. I couldn't believe it when not one of the people the malt splashed on got angry with me at all. They just laughed and wiped off the drippings. That was it. Unreal!!  Doubt I'd get that response today.

Years later when I was an AODA counselor, I would take my lunch breaks at Woolworth's.  I'd order a large coke, a burger and would purchase

one of those "Enquiring minds want to know magazines" Smiley Wink. I found that while reading, it gave me a brain break from all the groups & one-on-ones I was doing. All the bizarro that was in the magazine helped make all that was going on at work seem way more normal. Man, when I look at the world now, I think were all in that slow motion snow globe and life has become the magazine.  Yikes!!!

Loved this post and all who responded.  Brought back great memories.Thanks.

@Foxxee   I used to love to go to Woolworth's the day after Christmas to look for their great tin boxes with beautiful pictures on them, for mailing baked goods to relatives at Christmas.  I would get a hot dog to go and sit in the mall to eat it.

I don't think I ever did, but remember as a child lunching with mom at GC Murphy, Kresge's and People's Drug. All of them had some tasty and well prepared foods, along with sandwiches, burgers and so on. I also remember when department stores had restaurants, tea or lunch rooms and candy counters. Those were fun time.

@stevieb   My Mother and I would go to Macy's in SF restaurant/dining counter, can't remember the name, which was on the lowest level, because it had the most wonderful mini cinnamon buns, nothing like the whoppers that are made now.

Many times, when I would go into town with my mother.  Egg salad sandwich and a chocolate shake was my go-to.
