Re: Debit Card Fraud Attempts

@CelticCrafter   I have never had a breech before, but my husband has with two different credit cards.

Someone even used his card for on line gaming...at $8 a pop.  He just paid the charges fir months until one day he asked me what I was buying for all these $8 charges.

I said I didn't use the card.  He got most of his money back, but it was a nightmare jumping through hoops to get it.

My husband will only pay cash for gas...no cards at all.

My debit card never paid a dime for any fraudulent activity. I have had this account for years.

As long as I keep getting immediate notifications everytime that account is used, I feel my money is safe.

Re: Debit Card Fraud Attempts

It is that time of year.  I had that happen last summer, someone tried to get  $300 fromy bank debit card.  They tried three times.  But my bank suggested I cancel that debit card and the checking account it was linked to.  They set up a new checking account for me and issued a new debit card.  It was a nuisance but it was safer that way.

Our main reason for not having or wanting a debit card.

Cash pretty much every where except for Costco and Costco gas.  If we need the cash we make a physical withdrawal from our savings at the bank.

I would never carry too much cash. It is dangerous and you just never know what is around the corner. Use a credit card and pay off monthly.

Re: Debit Card Fraud Attempts

Scammers make me sick @Carmie .  I've had fradulent activity with my credit cards, but never my debit card.

After reading your post, I transferred the balance to my savings and just kept a little amount in my checking.  My savings is also NOT set up as overdraft to my checking.

Thanks for the heads up.

It's not just debit cards.  The same thing happens with credit cards.

@chrystaltree I'm well aware of that fact however with a credit card you aren't giving them access to every penny in the account the debit card is attached to.

Re: Debit Card Fraud Attempts

@CelticCrafter

With a debit card, you can choose a daily cash limit.  Which is why the thieves couldn't use my card.  They tried to take $300... twice and could not get anything because my daily cash limit is $250.   After the second attempt, the card was frozen and flagged for possible fraud.   Once we were in vacation, I used my debit card to take out $250 in cash two days in a row and I'd made a lot of purchases.  My bank, or rather it's computer system, flagged the card because the charges and withdrawals were unusual for me.  And the charges were in Myrtle Beach.  I live in MA.  My bank phoned me to verify that everything was legit.  For me, cash is much riskier than my debit card.

Re: Debit Card Fraud Attempts

Just a thought. Say, if you go to a restaurant to eat and give the waiter/waitress your card to pay the bill, usually they leave the table with your card to go to the kiosk. Just be careful, not saying anything against Wait staff, but I am well aware of how society has changed. Beware.

Re: Debit Card Fraud Attempts

@Carmie I'm guilty of keeping too much money in my checking account but couldn't someone access a savings account too with debit card information? I hate that we have to worry about things like this.
