This happened to a very close friend of mine just a few months ago. Everything seemed fine up to the 9th month.

We don't talk about it so I never asked what happened. I was told by the husband that the baby "did not make it".

I remember growing up when this happened, folks would say the baby "died at birth", then it was "still birth" "still born" but I prefer "born asleep".  Any child would understand that better.

I think this is a lovely description to soften the heartbreak, however I might avoid using it around  or with children.  It might frighten going to bed, asleep for them.

Is it common to put this kind of notice in the newspaper?

@Mindy D   Yes.

I live in a small community and no longer take a large newspaper but almost all in the area that pass away have a write up in the paper (not free anymore - the family pays per inch for the write up).  The write up also gives the names of the remaining family as well as the service information.

Sometimes the manner of death is revealed other times not.

 Is this not the norm for most areas?

It used to be common.  I don't see it anymore.  Newspapers have cut back a lot.  Now it seems the funerary home provides an in memoriam webpage.

@cjm61 So sorry for your loss.  Thanks for sharing your painful story.  We all learn.

@Mom2Dogs Sorry for your loss as well.
