Re: 29% of birds gone since 1970 in North America

Very sad. Many birds get lead poisoning, from ingesting either fishing tackle or ammo, containing this harmful substance

I've read that window strikes (especially tall buildings) kill more birds than anything. Especially during migration periods.

@morganjen   That may have been the case in the past, but I haven't read that in any of the articles I've read about this recently.

Edited to say:  I just read an article from the National Audubon Society that mentioned window strikes, so I stand corrected.  There are so many causes, climate change being one of them.

Besides birds, insects and amphibians are vanishing, too.  So much of our planet is being destroyed.

Humans are destroying our planet   Check out recent TIME magazine issue; entire issue devoted to our impending environmental crisis.  I'm in FL where acres of former ranch land and citrus groves are being bought up by developers to build thousands of homes and commercial businesses.  All trees being cut down and swampland filled in; natural habitats destroyed.  No more room to build along coasts so inland areas are being taken over.  All our resourses and infrastructure being stressed; wildlife disappearing.  American greed tops all common sense.  Developers would fill in the Everglades if they could get away with it.  I pray for my grandchildren and their children.  They will inherit a much different world than we live in now, if there is a planet left at all.

@PA Mom-mom

When I kept feeders (had to take them down because of squirrels, raccoons), I had occasional visits from Indigo Buntings.

The first time I saw one, I cried!  Silly, I know, but they are just so beautiful.   Beyond words really.

So tiny, but that color is like a shining light.  One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

Enjoy yours.  The invading hordes got so bad, I had to remove all feeders.  They chewed them up, broke into them, tore them from the trees and drug them off.  It was really almost frightening!

No bears in my part of Maryland, so it was smaller creatures.

But, miss seeing my Cardinals and finches!

We also had to take our bird feeders down. We had quite an assortment of birds for a number of years. Then we ended up with cats hanging around. The clumps of feathers became more frequent. So we decided to take down the feeders. It just didn't seem fair to the birds.

@tobes   It's been on all the news programs since yesterday.  It's been in the newspaper, and there are articles about it everywhere online on reliable websites.
