That would be interesting to find out more about this young man.  He had much more than 18 y/o today.  A house and barn...wow...at that age!

Loved this guy's appeal. Young men had to hustle in 1865. Most worked from dawn to dusk learning survival skills from their elders. Not uncommon for an 18 year old to be setting up a homestead.

Not sure what year mail order brides became a popular option, but this guy could have had a response to his advertisement. Spinster's were looking, too. Now people just swipe apps. 

Everything started earlier back then, with lifespan's challenging. It's in stark contrast to what we see today. Now kids 25-30 (still at home) are our version of 1800's 18 year old's. Almost, but not as driven as previous hard times required.

I feel sorry for the young man.  He seemed lonely, but I truly hope in the end he found happiness.
