I've been recycling old gemstones for about twenty years. I took an old sapphire tennis bracelet and had the stone bezel set into another gold bracelet. The extra stones were used to make a pair of sapphire earrings.

 

Also had a garnet ring made into a pair of studs.

I have a ring with a blue topaz and I've been thinking of seeing if it could be made into a pendant.  It is a really big stone - I bought it years ago when both gold & the stone was pretty inexpensive.  It's too big to go into one of those pendants but I think I'll take it to a jeweler and find out.  I'd wear it more as a pendant since it is just too big to wear (for me) as a ring.
