Recycling old gemstones

[ Edited ]

I have been looking with interest at the beautiful glass charm pendants women all over the USA are now wearing.  I have stopped some to ask about what they chose to put in them, and there are many stories that go along with the pendants.

I was going though my old jewelry and came across a bag filled with gems that I harvested from old gold before sending them off to USgold buyers for cash and got to thinking, these faceted gemstones would look great in these pendants.

I'm going to pick up a few sterling silver pendants and I hope the recipients will love them.

Seems they come in different metals, shapes and widths.

My DIL is a December baby, I'll put her birthstone and my son's in hers.

What a brilliant idea. I have some sterling rings I wouldn't mind ruining to harvest the stones.

Esmerelda, I remember reading about your doing that back when everyone was selling off their gold. Seems like it involved a vice and nail clippers?

Ha!  you remember back that far?   Only one that was invible set with rows of princess cut cz needed a vise.   Yes, a leaver nail clipper easily prys back the prongs without damage to the prong or gemstones.

My grandfather was a jewelry designer and I have inherited a LOT of old style jewelry. I also have a box of stones all faceted. I would love to use them but I don't want to set them in non precious metals and gold findings have gotten too pricey. I have a lot of jewelry as it is , but it is sad that these stones sit unused.

A brilliant idea and so meaningful!  You're a resourceful woman; that's a great way to recycle gemstones!

@esmeraldagooch  Esmerelda, what do these pendants that you can place your own loose gemstones in look like?
