How to protect computer when giving up paid McAfee subscription

My McAfee subscription expires next week. I don't want to renew it. My desktop (which runs Windows XP) is on its last legs. When it goes, I'm going to replace it with an iMac. I use Microsoft Outlook as my email program.

In the meantime, can you give me suggestions on what I can install to replace the McAfee? I was thinking about Microsoft Security Essentials. Does that take care of firewall AND antivirus?

Any other suggestions? I don't want to throw caution to the wind here, I want to make sure I'm installing good protection, but the McAfee subscription is very expensive and I don't really like it.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?
