I live in Alabama, that figure looks right to me

I think $40,000 would be the lowest for a mortgage, if you make less you can probably find an unconventional deal, like a rent-to-own

Alabama has some of the lowest property taxes in the country, that helps as well.

I live in NY, and the $91,000 is an aerage since upstate is much cheaper than Scarsdale

I live in Northern Va and I know the cost of living is very, very expensive.

Most people who retire and live in Va move to North or South Carolina, anywhere out of Va.

Here in NC it varies widely on what you consider average, and the area in which you wish to live.

We moved from central NY to southwest Florida in 2001. We own our own home after paying off the 15 year mortgage. Our fixed income (pension + social security) is below the Florida average. We are doing OK.

I live east of NYC. $91,000 doesn’t even come close if you want a nice house.Maybe a starter. The cost of living is very high here.Young people are leaving, moving south where they can buy a big new house for a lot less.

I live in so. California.  This salary seems right if you live a number of miles east of Los Angeles. Any closer, and you couldn't afford a shack.

My idea of medium must be different than on the map.  Think the salaries on the map seem low.
