It's my understanding that the only way to get an avatar here is to upload a picture from one's computer. Is that correct? If so, is every avatar unsafe? I mean, my avatar is an emoticon but I had to first save it to my computer, then upload it here. Is it still a risk to my privacy?

These are good questions and I've been wondering the same thing.

To expand on your question about avatars, what about any other photos that we have saved on our computer, that we would like to share on a particular thread by copying and pasting into the body of the reply?

If we don't share photos on FB, etc.,  and we have our iPhone camera/privacy settings tight, for example, what else can we do to protect our privacy, short of never uploading any photos to this forum?

Re: For those posting pictures of themselves....

Any picture that was ever posted online can be found by doing a google image search.  All you do is click and drag the picture and information can be found from there.

Thanks for the comment and info.  I wound up deleting the pic as I was just practicing and didn't mean to take the thread OT.  Then after doing so I saw your question. Woops, LOL!  Anyway, the perfume nestled in the peonies is Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede.  I've been wanting it but no place to smell it around it and hate to pay the price unsniffed.

I love the aroma of old fashion peonies. (most of our new ones have little to no scent) I wanted to love the Jo Malone perfume.  I didn't get a lot of peony from it. I think it's sort of fruity.  My initial sniff I liked it but as I pulled back, I thought it had a leathery smell. (I know, strange)

I recognize that gorgeous bouquet of yours and remember your beautiful wedding pictures.

Well that's interesting. Must be the "blush suede" element.  Mahalo for the review.

Funny about you remembering my wedding bouquet. Now I hope I don't get all paranoid and think I have a stalker, LOL!  Please let me know if you click on it and it takes you to the beach resort where we got "Maui'd" or to our house where our wedding photo album lives. Smiley Wink

Re: For those posting pictures of themselves....

It kind of shocked me when people were posting their real pictures. I entertained the idea for a few minutes, and, well, you all see what I've decided.

Hi i see the pic. 😃

I don't go and try to do sleuthing to find out who is whom  on facebook.  I've discovered in the past few years, that some do.  I obviously was very naive as I once posted a comment on Jacque G.'s FB page years ago and a person "discovered" who I was.  I just don't care what other posters look like, and I don't stalk facebook trying to uncover who posters are or try to live vicariously through hosts' lives.

Like I said, I was naive. Since I don't peruse into peoples' personal business, I erroneuosly thought others didn't.  I've learned that a few do.  They know everything about everyone through detective work.  It's odd, creepy and has a bit of a "stalker" mentality.

I understand completely.  When it's something we wouldn't dream of doing we tend to be very trusting.  In my case, I know a couple of people who were traced from anonymous forums, identified and then stalked in their "real world."  It's not a pretty thing and is enough to teach us to be skeptical and even (unfortunately) cynical.  Online security isn't a laughing matter, even when it comes to what we think of as simple, "harmless" forums.

Sadly, the attempt to provide a "heads up" to folks in case they're not aware is often met with bad results even though our intent is positive.

Hi !  I would APPRECIATE the heads' up!!! Smiley Happy

Do not worry about me stalking you.  Awhile ago we discussed your bouquet, (beautiful) your stunning dress and hair. (I think there was a big old blurry dot over your face) A right click on your picture gives me nothing I can decipher.

....and let's not even mention that someone can take YOUR photo off here and paste it onto a porn actress's body.

That's how I learned to stay private!

Re: For those posting pictures of themselves....

well, I did a copy paste of a URL from a picture of my cat on my FB page, I copied the address into the Google search engine and it found my Pinterest page and my son's Pinterest page so even with one picture of a cat, my real name and children can be found. From there I can imagine that one can find out my address, any previous names and relatives doing a people search.

Not a good idea to use any pictures downloaded from your comouter at all. I have my FB settings so only my FB friends can see them, but even so, one of them could copy and paste a picture I have posted onto the interent and ionce out there, I am afraid pretty much anyone could find more information.

We live in an age of instant information and even those not tech savvy can find information.

I'm done with P.C. Just say what you mean and mean what you say. It's easier.

Not ALL my personal info showed up, but my pic has been used on my Facebook and Twitter as well as various work-related articles. So, basically my name and workplace showed up when I did a Google image search. If I type my name in Google, I get several pages of hits because of my field of work.

And I just have to say, that was one fine pic!

Yes, one fine pic indeed!!
