Does anyone here live in Las Vegas?

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are retired and considering moving to either Summerlin or Henderson NV. Any feedback on the pros and cons would be appreciated. We currently live in San Diego and I’m sick to death of CA. The people here are not friendly and  I need a change

of scenery.to keep my mind occupied so I don’t keep thinking of my brother who died in Oct. He was the last family member I had left. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Does anyone here live in Las Vegas?

We had relatives who lived in Henderson maybe 15 years ago. Then it was at the edge of the desert but I understand it has expanded greatly since then.

They had younger children and worked there. At that time they did not particularly like it as there are many transients working in the gambling industry. Also, they said you cannot live there if you are a gambler...you will lose everything.

Now things have changed and there are many retirees there and probably more activities that do not center around the Strip and gambling.

Sorry I can't provide a more current view. Best wishes. Try renting, maybe?

Sorry about the demise of your brother Sunshine. Life does seem grey at times of grief & loss.

IMHO: I'd not expect a move to make things better. All that the outside world offers is an illlusion. It's all about what's inside of you. Find peace within.

Re: Does anyone here live in Las Vegas?

@SunshineI live in Phoenix but have relatives who live in Las Vegal (Henderson) and they love it.

You probably should take into consideration the almost 5 months of extreme, excessive heat that is unrelenting and continuous.

When I came to Phx almost 30 years ago, I left the NE and knew I would have to swap the horrible winters for very hot summers.  I chose to do that and I've become accostumed to the summer heat.

However, San Diego's ideal year-round weather is something you will have to consider.  Good Luck!

[ Edited ]

Sunshine,

I do not live in Las Vegas but have family there and some recently acquired new friends there.

In a way, what I will pass on to you is simply what I know about the friends and new acquaintances whose homes I have not visited.  Still, it might be worth something insofar as trends go.

Also, I've had to stay in the Summerlin area recently, and I do like it very much -- I've never visited Henderson.  I do not like gambling, but the only casinos I am comfortable in are in the Summerlin area.  More my age range (retirees), subdued, respectable.  I imagine those in Henderson are the same.

What I know or have heard:

1.  One of the original members of a world-famous rock group chose Summerlin for his home and has been there for quite a while.  He loves it.

2.  Another member of this famous rock group (who joined at a later date from the originals but picked up with them again recently -- only to retire from the group once more) -- chose to live in Henderson.  He had owned multiple homes in Las Vegas, but this time around, he chose Henderson for himself.

3.  On one of my flights to Las Vegas this past year, my seat mate and I clicked and I learned much about her on that flight and during a subsequent conversation when we had lunch back in our area (but she was moving to Las Vegas; looking for a home that trip).  Her husband is head of an international engineering group and is doing a major project in the Vegas area.  They chose Henderson for their new home.

That's all I know, but this info suggests that Henderson is trending.   I do not know what it looks like, but I know I like the appearance of Summerlin.

Hope this helps, if only a teensy bit.

ETA:  Major new developments appear to be to the north of Las Vegas.  Sometimes, when I am in such areas and sense the remoteness from what one normally thinks of when Las Vegas comes to mind and see the desert around me with those mountains circling about, I feel the Indians may attack soon.   A strange sensation overtakes me.  That place is growing.

Sympathies for your loss.  Perhaps before you make a big move, you should get some grief counselling.  Just to ensure that your grief isn't the underlying reason for wanting to move because wherever you go, you will take that grief with you.

Re: Does anyone here live in Las Vegas?

We've lived in Henderson since 2002 (Green Valley Ranch).  Originally from the Sacramento area.  We were considering Summerlin, but we decided we wanted to be closer to the airport (about 8 miles away).  My husband and I love it here.  People are very friendly if you are.  Housing prices are so much less than California as well as gasoline prices and utiities.  Love the weather and we tolerate the couple hot months.  And no, we are not gamblers and hardly go to the Strip except when we have family and want to see a show or eat.  There are some really nice communities in Henderson with Anthem being one of them.

Re: Does anyone here live in Las Vegas?

@Sunshine I'm so sorry for the loss of your brother.  Let some more time pass before you make any major decisions.  My husband died just over 2 years ago & I really didn't think clearly for a while.

Have you been to either Summerlin or Henderson?  I live in southern CA (Orange Co) & it seems like Henderson is becoming quite popular.  I had never heard of it before but just in this last year I was on a tour in Italy & there was a woman on the tour who was from Henderson.  And a neighbor just got back from her annual trip to Las Vegas, but she stays in & shops in Henderson.

If you leave San Diego & regret the move you might not be able to afford to come back if you change your mind.  But then I know LOTS of people are leaving CA for NV, AZ, TX, etc...

Like someone else suggested you could also try renting there first.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Re: Does anyone here live in Las Vegas?

I prefer Summerlin to Henderson- it’s at least 5 degrees cooler in the summer- and in our summers, it makes a difference!  Nearer to the mountains

I asked my friend who lives in Vegas for many years, above is her response.
