We've had small children attacked on trails in highly populated areas even though they are with adults.  Coyotes have no qualms about attacking dogs on lease.  When they are hungry, they will jump fences and attack during daylight hours.  See if you can get animal control out to remove the animal.  Remember, these guys are pack animals and usually if you see 1 there are several lurking about.
