Hello friends, just wondering if anyone out there can give me some advise. for about the last six months my left leg from the knee down has been extremely swollen, it does not hurt or cramp but as you can imagine it is extremely heavy, went to my Dr. he sent me to get and ultra sound to check for a blood clot, test was all clear, he set me up with an apt with a vascular surgeon for next week, anyone one else have this? thanks

Re: unexplained leg swelling

I wish you the best, Marzi. I am sure one of your doctors will get to the root cause of your swollen foot. It is noteworthy that only one leg is affected, and perhaps that will provide the most important insight into what is causing your problem.

Good luck to you. I hope it isn't too serious and that it can be treated effectively with full resolution.

Do you have a history of heart disease or circulatory disorders?

You are doing the right thing and my suggestion would be to follow through with the doctors you are now seeing. I could throw a lot of "what could be's" your way but appears to me you are on the right track to finding the right answers.

Hopefully you come back and update this, eh?

Re: unexplained leg swelling

Sometimes something known as a Baker's Cyst can erupt. It is usually located in the back of the knee. My best friends ex boyfriend just had this happen. They had to drain it in the hospital, he is now back home and doing fine.

I once had cellulitis once on my lower leg, but your doctor would have known this if this was what you had. It was very swollen and had an itchy red rash, which is how it got infected to the point of being so swollen. I never use a disposable razor from the knee down, as this would always trigger this type of reaction. I had to take antibiotics for it. My legs tend to be dry so I always use a moisturizer on them, usually coconut oil, and I never, ever scratch and inch because this is how it all started. Any tear in the skin can lead to an infection.

Re: unexplained leg swelling

My first thought was blood clot, but you have had this ruled out. Good luck to you.

Did you have a Venous or Arterial Ultra Sound? When they suspected blood clots in my legs they did both Venous and Arterial Doppler Tests. I've had the Arterial Doppler Test twice, once was lying down and the other was exercising on a treadmill while hooked up to a whole bunch of blood pressure type cuffs on all parts of my legs.

Sounds like your doctor ruled out water retention since you didn't mention it. Never a bad idea to see a Specialist in the field when your GP cannot come up with a reason for this.

The only times I had swollen legs was because of fluid retention when I was in the hospital getting a Colonoscopy every few days. Was on IV fluids the whole time and I couldn't even put my shoes or slippers on during that time.

They gave me both oral and intravenous Lasix and boy does that ever keep ya going you know where. During this time I was also have blood transfusions every few days because of colonic blood loss.

Keep us posted when you find out more about this will you?

Re: unexplained leg swelling

Until that appt., keep your legs elevated when sitting. Also, if you can walk in a pool, the water pressure is good for reducing swelling (as long as there are no open wounds).
