I got the lenses covered by Medicare. I wish I could have afforded the better ones but that wasn't an option.

I worked for an ophthalmologist, in the mid-70s when they started doing this surgery and he would only do one at a time, in case you had a bad reaction, it would only be one eye. just curious if times have changed.
As far as I know, it's still only one at a time.

I just finished up getting both of my eyes done. Our insurance will take care of it. If we get a bill, we'll pay it. I don't remember if all was covered when Mr. had his done. It had to be done. Now I see far away greatly, and for up close, got readers, (at the store). But if I want to get glasses down the road, they are holding the script for me.
Good luck on your adventure. It was easy peasy, the drops are a pain, but it has to be done too. It's over now, before you know it.

When my time nears, (not yet, but in a couple of years), I want the distance lens. I can wear readers, I don't care about that. One thing I would never have is a scalpel procedure. I will pay extra to have it done by laser and be put out. I don't trust the scalpel to be as accurate as laser.

@haddon9 wrote:My friend just went through this. Medicare would pay in full for the basic lenses. However if she wanted an upgrade where she could see well for both distance and reading the option was an extra big expense. She went for the option since she didn't want to wear glasses.
I'm not there yet but when I need to have it done I will opt for the basic one covered in full by Medicare. I wore contacts for decades but now that I am older they stopped working well for me and I don't mind wearing glasses. Glasses cover the eye bags.
I agree about covering the eye bags!
And as I mentioned in a prior post results aren't guaranteed. I've had friends get the extra lens with complications requiring lasik later. Guess that could be true with basic also, don't know.

It's one eye at a time. When I had mine done he fixed one eye, I went back the next day and had it checked to make sure all was well, then had the other eye done the next day. So I was at the office each morning for 4 days.

I made the appointment for surgery yesterday. First eye will be on June 15th and the second one will be June 29th. There are many appts before and after each eye. My last post op appt will be a month later on July 29th. Have a pre op appt at th end of May where I will be measured and asked what I want and then explained to about the whole procedure. Now I have to work on the dry eye situation. More eye drops, more warm compresses and such. Am planning on going for the procedure that Medicare will cover. As I said before--am not opposed to wearing glasses--have since I was 8 or 10--so no big deal. Will research the whole thing more tho.

@CalminHeart : I too got the Medicare option, but not because of the extra money ( I could/ would have covered the cost). The Ophthalmologist said with my eyes there would be no benefit. Btw, I too had the drops inserted during the surgery so no "drops routine" after the fact.
