I know this topic has been discussed before.  I have been taking Simvastatin for years.  20 mg. Several years I began to connect the aching in my lower legs to it.  My doctor had me switch to a non statin which did not work as well. ( my numbers are not that high).  So I started on 10 mg Simvastin for a few months then for the last 4 or so been back to 20.  Here we go again with the aching.  I am seeing her next week,  I think I am done with the statins...

I would consider taking ubiguinol (CoQ10 supp). That will help alleviate leg pains.

@bargainsgirl ---I could write a book about how I can't take any type of statins. Have the family type of high cholesterol, and also am horribly sensitive to statins. I swear, I've tried them all. This has been a thing for me since my early 20's--am almost 72 now. My #'s never were great taking them either and no amount of exercising or diet or supplements will do any good. I took Crestor and came up with walnut size lumps on the back of my ankle--on the achilles tendons,  and because my foot dr didn't know about the meds I was taking,or  that issue was a side ffect, I ended up getting surgery to remove both--when I should have just stopped taking the meds first. Un- needed surgey.

I am now using a drug called repatha--it is not a statin but something called a PCSK9 inhibitor which helps the liver remove the bad cholesterol--LDL from the blood.  It can be used alone or with a statin. It is in auto inject form and I take 3 shots a month. but it is crazy expensive altho ins does pay for part. Have had good results, but still a work in progress. I see a cardiologist and a pharmacy dr who work together --I am a complex case---lucky me.

@SilleeMee ---I tried ubiquinol and it did nothing for me. Had the leg/hip pains no matter what. Unfortunately----but that's me.

@bargainsgirl

I took a statin for about a week, and the muscle and joint pain side effects made no sense, since I have rheumatoid arthritis.

Add more pain to the equation?

WHY would I take a med that hurts me?

FWIW - everyone is free to research each of these points themselves:

THEY INVENTED A DISEASE SO THEY COULD SELL YOU THE CURE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

In the 1980s, the pharmaceutical industry had a problem. They had developed a new class of drugs called statins to lower cholesterol, but not enough people had high cholesterol to make the drug profitable.

So they did something brilliant. They changed the definition of high cholesterol.

In 1998, the medical establishment lowered the threshold for "high cholesterol" from 240 to 200. Overnight, 42 million healthy people were suddenly diagnosed with a "disease" they did not have the day before.

In 2004, they lowered it again. Millions more became patients.

Today, statins are the most profitable class of drugs in human history, generating over $1 trillion in sales.

But here is the truth they buried: Cholesterol is not your enemy. It is the building block of your brain. Your brain is 60% fat, and cholesterol is essential for neural communication. It is the precursor to testosterone, estrogen, and vitamin D.

When there is inflammation in your arteries, your liver sends cholesterol to patch the damage. Blaming cholesterol for heart disease is like blaming the firefighters for the fire just because they are always at the scene.

When you take a statin, you are shutting down your liver's ability to produce the very substance your brain needs to function. This is why the most common side effects of statins are memory loss, muscle pain, and chronic fatigue.

They turned a vital biological repair mechanism into a disease.

Stop fearing cholesterol. Start fixing the inflammation that causes your body to need it.

thinkingoutloud  You are exactly right.  Statins are poison and I am also not able to take them, thank goodness!  As far as changing the numbers, the same is true for many other illnesses.  The pharm industry is making millions off of unsuspecting patients with the help of their doctors.

@ThinkingOutLoud If I could give you one million hearts, I would. I have long believed that the onslaught of dementia and alzheimers in our lifetime has been this very thing.  I have a family member right now, that is going through this.  Not an old person, but will take any drug that the dr's throw at him.

I did my own research, and refuse to take something to possibly ward off something that may never happen.
It has turned into scare everyone that something may happen to them.  I have seen how all these drugs have terrible side effects shown, but how many may be silently stealing our health instead.

@ThinkingOutLoud  Bravo, couldn't have said it better myself. Was hoping people were becoming more aware of the dangers of these drugs. Your body is a beautiful thing, in that it knows what you need and how much. If your cholesterol is running higher than normal, your body cuts down on producing it. If it needs more, it amps it up.

It is sad but true that drugs are a business that brings in billions. If there were no customers for life, then the business suffers. Sadly, it's all designed to keep you on the merry go round for life, and keep you blind to it's dangers. Your body needs cholesterol and the brain especially needs it. We are seeing a rise in dementia and alzheimer's like never before due to these drugs effects. Which in turn is another money making opportunity for the pharma industry.

Some medications are needed for some things, and only then for a short time. ex: antibiotics. just not for life long use. Please do your own research on the dangers of statins and other drugs. You just might save yours, or the life of someone you know. Lastly, it is now well documented that those with high cholesterol are healthier and live longer than those whose levels are low. Don't let fear cloud your better judgement, and listen to your body when it's telling you this isn't good for it.

Terrible pain in my arms from statins. I stopped taking them. I take Zetia, though it isn't as efective as a statin, but no pain from  it.
