8.2 hemoglobin. He will be getting transfusion(s) as soon as it's thawed

He's in good spirits watching Thursday Night Football & I'm recording the Blackhawks for when he comes home.

Hi Mary Bailey,

Thawed? Does he have a rare type of blood or is he possibly getting blood plasma? As I said in my other post, I've had well over a hundred transfusions and can't remember a time when I had to wait for it to be "thawed". Even the time my organs were bleeding out because of my high INR/ProTime, they did not even wait for the plasma to thaw before getting it into me as quickly as possible. New one to me for sure.

I am glad he is doing ok, but I had no doubts from my multiple experiences with hemoglobin as low as 5.9 at times. It does take awhile even after the transfusions to get those numbers up again. Seems to depend on the person a bit also as some take longer than others. Hopefully he has no further problems with bleeding.

In case you don't read the "Health and Fitness, Sports Forum", I have my own favorite hockey team. Who would'da guessed! Always have liked the Blackhawks except when they play my guys. The got beat in Playoffs by the same team that beat my guys for the Stanley Cup Finals. Even though I rooted for my guys, the LA Kings had the best team going last season and I predicted long before the playoffs that they would win The Cup, even though they were playing my team in the Finals.

You take care of yourself and quite worrying about your husband. Unless he has further complications he is doing great and I am happy for both of you.

Just in case, this is my team:

I've had 3 routine colonoscopies now, and every time they find a couple of small polyps--runs in my family. The first time I had one removed, I had a lot of bleeding and had to be readmitted. They went back in and cauterized the site where the polyp was removed as it had started bleeding. It was a pain because you have to do the prep again, but it ended up not being a huge problem, and I needed a couple of units of blood. I went in on a Monday afternoon and was home by Wednesday. Had a bland diet for a few days and no aspirin. I have not had any problems with polyp removal since.

It was very, very scary going in to it because of all the bleeding, so I can understand your concern. But having been there myself, I am confident that they'll have him good as new in no time. Try not to worry. All the best to both of you. (((hugs)))

ETA: I just saw that he got through the procedure. Glad to hear it went well. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

Thanks again! You have all been so kind and reassuring.

He's got one more blood draw at noon. If that is good I'll be bringing him home late this afternoon.

I was out this morning doing errands so I can cater to DH when he comes home! {#emotions_dlg.wub}

I was concerned it was plasma when they said thawed. I called & spoke to the nurse she assured me it was not plasma just blood. He must have misunderstood.

DH is a huge Blackhawks fan! so are both of our sons & our grandson. Me not so much, but I'm all for whatever makes them happy.

.

update: DH hemoglobin is down again. One Dr says she wants the GI Dr to make a decision.

He's not coming home today. Three nights in the hospital after a routine colonoscopy is unbelievable. I think they really botched this whole treatment..

The polyp caused unforseen issues- he's in the right place, it's better to be stable before he goes home. My first colonoscopy was in 2005, I ended up staying in the hospital for several days.

Mary Bailey,

I know several people that have had bleeding problems after having a routine colonoscopy with polyp removals. Most of their doctors choose "laser" to seal the bleeding. That is what I had that stopped my bleeding back in 2008, but it lasted only until 2009, and then the bleeding started all over again. I have never had a polyp and my bleeding was caused, they think, mostly because of being on: Plavix and Coumadin for about 5 years prior to the colon bleeding.

As I said previously, I have 3 permanent Titanium Clips holding part of my right colon together and so far so good. The Steel Clips they put in lasted only 10 days and I was back in the hospital again.

Don't know about "botched the procedure" as everyone does not have the same colon. I do not know one other person, and I've met thousands over the years of running my adult hockey league for 52 years now. None of them had the bleeding I had with my colon without any procedure or colonoscopy being done.

If he has had solid foods it is easy to see if one is bleeding internally when the food passes through. I wouldn't be in a hurry for him to get home until they have completely made sure his bleeding has stopped. If not, his hemoglobin is going to keep going down. And if his ferritin levels get low he might also need an Iron Infusion, as that is not uncommon when one has had several blood transfusions along with internal bleeding.

I went in for a "routine blood draw", ended up having a heart cath and I didn't go home for over 3 weeks. Things can and do happen and I feel fortunate that my doctors have been able to keep me going, and pretty good at that.

Hopefully they get this thing fixed and the bleeding stopped permanently. Been round and round too many times and I felt so sorry for my wife having to be concerned about me for long periods of time. Now it is my turn to take care of her after her emergency surgery a week ago Thursday.

Take care of yourself and let the medical personal take care of your husband during his hospital stay.
