rethinking supplements. what do we really need?

I saw a doctor on TV recently who said that people don't really need to take all the vitamin/mineral supplements that many take. he said that in terms of daily supplements, all a person really needs is an 81mg aspirin and a statin and that everything else is unnecessary.

I've been in the health care field for almost 40 years but I have to admit that when it comes to vitamin & mineral supplements, I'm as confused as most people seem to be. there seems to be conflicting information almost daily about what is and is not beneficial. something is said to be necessary one day, and the next week there is some story about clinical evidence that it may actually be harmful.

I take several supplements : calcium, B complex, D, omega, coQ10, biotin and more. when I line all those containers up I always wonder if I really need these things, or have I just fallen for the hype.

what is your opinion?
