OMG, I am so glad I found this thread today!   I went to the dentist yesterday (Thurs.) one of my back teeth broke in-half and the back part is loose!  It is more sore than hurting and of course, I cannot eat on that side!  After spending 2 hrs. in her office with x-rays and sitting, the tooth cannot be saved, so I have to go to an oral surgeon to have it extracted!  I have a "consult" on Tuesday of next week (8/4) and then they will schedule an appt. to have tooth extracted!  Thank goodness I am not in pain, but by then I maybe!  Why does it take so long to have a tooth pulled these days?

Anyway, I was also told I have other problems as well, and can look forward to many trips to the dentist!

I have two other teeth that will also need pulling on the other side of my mouth, they are not bothering me right now, but I wonder if I should have them pulled all at this time  .............  any suggestions!

Thanks for letting me rant, I am glad I am not alone in this.  I do not have dental insurance, but thankfully, we do have funds to pay for most of this!

Oh, dear, Hooty, your story sounds just like mine.  I broke a back tooth in November and have been going ever since.  Of course they find more issues, lol.

Any idea why an oral surgeon has to do the extraction?  Luckily, I was able to get a crown.  Then a cleaning, scaling and still have been in the process of getting an old bridge replaced.  The new bridge (temporary) hurt.  Found out I need a root canal which will be on the 4th so we will both be having an experience Tuesday, lol.

My son had all of his wisdom teeth pulled out at the same time but he thinks it would have been less painful to do only one or two at a time.  I don't think I'd do more than one at a time but then, Im a big chicken.  It will probably be cheaper to do it all at one time, though.  Good luck.

Thanks MsFoxxie, I am a chicken too, and I am leaning towards one at a time, got to be able to eat something, even though I hope I can lose some weight with this, LOL!

I looked up the oral surgeons and they also do dental implants, so I am sure I will be given the whole story on all their services at the consultation!   Everyone gets a piece of the action, LOL!

I had the same thing, an upper tooth, the farthest one in the back had a cavity, then a filling, then it still hurt, so after pulling out all the filling the dentist noticed a crack in the whole thing, had to be extracted by an orthodontis so in two days I got it pulled out, I wanted it out as soon as possible.  Anyway they send you to a specialist because sometimes they put bone replacement in the socket after it is pulled in case you want an implant.  I didn't get that, the doctor said no one misses that tooth, however I am concerned about the bottom coming out as when a tooth has nothing to counteract it well it can come out.  So maybe someday I will have to do something but I don't want to now, I must of had 10 dental appointments in the last two months and am still paying for all of it.  I clench at night so this is something I have to fix but don't want to spend yet another 500 for a night guard.  Not only the procedures scare me but the cost is outrageous.  I wouldn't get all your teeth pulled, just the one that is cracked, and maybe get a second opinion.

At what point is enough , enough? I only have a few teeth left that haven't had at least a filling, if not a root canal or more. I have 2 bridges and one of them needs replaced for another $2000. I have dental ins. but it won't cover this as the bridge is only a few years old.I have a lot of tenderness from my teeth, despite having so much expensive work done on them. At this point and at my age (66) I am beginning to feel I'd rather just have them removed than continue to have all this expensive and painful dental work all the time. I take very good care , brushing, flossing and gargling all to no avail. Flossing is how I cracked my bridge. Both my parents had dentures - I think I just have genetically bad teeth.

Boy can I relate! I also have inherited problems! I asked my dentist the same..I think dentures are worth looking into. Its a money pit! He wants to charge me over $8000 to fix some fillings, a couple of crowns and add some bling,(veneers) as he called it! I don't have any dental insurance! Yeah, right!Cat Mad

IMHO the 'old school' dentists who don't push all of this 'bling' such as veneers and tooth whitening products are the best. It is hard to trust one who tries to hard sell you on a lot of expensive veneers...fix the broken stuff first, I say!

Absolutely agree!!!!!!!!!! I've decided to go back to my past dentist..hopefully my other dentist will send the xrays! I decided to get one of those dental plans, where they give you a good discount! I had one before and it made a big difference. The dentists these days charge and arm and a leg!!!!!!!! Ridunculous!!!!!!

I thought I loved my old fashioned dentist until he retired in April and the fellow he sold his practice to said I needed 5 crowns replace and 4 fillings. What really bothered me is that 3 of the fillings were in teeth I'd been asking my good old dentist about for a couple of years and he said we'll just keep an eye on them.

To top it all off I broke what I thought was a filling Saturday and the dentist said I need an implant in it and possibly on the tooth next to it which has had a crown for years. He won't know until he can take the crown off and see "what's going on". And by the way, that's $10,000 for 2 teeth. One is an eye tooth and I'd have to pay another $700  for a "false tooth" until they do the permanent implant in 6 months.  I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't see "10,000 as a big deal. My dentist (who's 40) said "if it were my mother, I'd tell her to do it." Of course, him mother wouldn't be shelling out 10 G's.

... And Medicare is denying one of my meds.

I totally understand what you are going through. I , also, do not have thousands of dollars to spend at the dentist. The real kick in the butt is my health insurance will pay 100% for me to have my teeth pulled and get dentures.

Now that surprises me. I think I might consider it if Medicare paid for it. I feel like my mouth is a money pit.

OMG!!!!!!!!!! I will be leigible for Medicare next year..I am definetly getting dentures! It won't be fun getting our teeth pulled!!!!!!!!!

Sorry ladies, Medicare does not pay for dental work, I've already looked it up!  The only way they will pay is if you are in the hospital when you have dental work done!  Crazy, I know!

I hear you, Daisy.  At this point he feels he's losing money on you.  It's all about the green.  Good luck.
