Re: What really works for SLEEP???

@spent2much   I know what works for me whether I have a cough or not - a good shot of nyquil always puts me out for the night.

Don't know if this is a good ting or a bad thing...

as someone who has suffered with insomnia for several years...the best place for advice for any sleep issues...your physician.  I do realize its nice to get helpful hints from others to see if they might work for you before you seek the help from a physician.  I have done that also, but the best advice is a physician.  They know YOU .  We don't.  And everyone is different and what works for one may not work for others and can lead to more frustrations.  Which does not help .  Best of luck for you!

In my opinion, the above is the best advice you can get!

Re: What really works for SLEEP???

As I have stated in my earlier post a calcium/magnesium quality supplement will help. I am sure you have heard of having a glass a milk before bed...this is why...calcium helps your brain release melatonin and the magnesium helps you relax. Our doctor suggested this when I was going thru menopause and it worked and still does. The two together is best.

Or won’t, at least for me. So glad that you and your doctor came up with something that has worked for you!

Re: What really works for SLEEP???

As some of you may remember I am a nurse. Always worth the try to go natural first and see if this works for you, of course try it for a week or two and give your body a chance to react to the supplement. Of course if you find it does not work for sleep know you are taking something good for your body.  And of course discuss with your doctor, most physicians are now more opened to the idea to try something natural first  rather than a prescribed sedative. Yes, what works for one does not always work for another. There are many good suggestions on this thread....I wish you better sleep.

Sleep is one of those things you really have to find out

the underlying cause. Taking this-that & medications will

just mask the issue.

Re: What really works for SLEEP???

OP--I sleep terrible--have ever since I had kids---am a undx insomniac---I take .5 of ativan at night to get me to sleep. And I take a magnesium supplement that is a broad spectrum magnesium cap each night and while I DON'T sleep any longer, my sleep is more restful. If I get 5 hours of good sleep, I'm dancing for joy. Only take 1- 200 mg cap at night. Got it from AMZ. DD who has horrible sleep too,  takes it  and she agrees with me. And I noticed better sleep a few days into taking it. Not suggesting you take any drugs tho------you need to see a dr about it.

Re: What really works for SLEEP???

I agree with others, ever since I started taking magnesium supplements daily I sleep very soundly, often like a corpse!  Best accidental discovery I've ever made, as I started taking it for muscle cramps and didn't know about the sleep effect when I started it.  It's also great for preventing muscle cramps!

Re: What really works for SLEEP???

I agree with the others, since you have tried the home remedies, it's time to see doctor.  However, when I had sleep issues many years ago, my doctor recommended a few things that worked like a charm or me.

1.  Don't sleep with the tv on.  The light from the screen can interfere with normal sleep patterns.

2.  Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, even on the weekends.

3.  If you don't fall asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed, don't lay there trying to force sleep.  Getting all worked up over it only makes things worse.  Get up and read or listen to soothing music, or do a puzzle.  Something that is calming and when you feel drowsy, go to bed.  Don't think of the sleeplessness as some big huge problem.  Accept that it happens to everyone at some point and it's temporary.

There were a couple of other things that I don't remember but these are the things that got me over the hump and I still do them.  However, now I do take 2 Benadryl tablets.
