First of all, I do not understand the game. I've seem my GC play soccer and it's NOTHING like that. The field is about 10 acres, the goals are as big as a barn. The players appear to have no protective gear whats so ever. The referees write them up on yellow cards. Lots of new things for me.
That being said: I have no real clue about the specifics of the game. However, The players are unbelievably gorgeous. I mean David Beckam plus gorgeous. I am a now a fan!
The same thing happened when my kids were small. My DH, and brother took me and the kids to professional, (think Hulk Hogan) wrestling matches. I went kicking and screaming, but as soon as those wrestlers came out-I became a lifelong fan.
So, if anyone wants you to watch a FIFA game, give it a try. You just might find that there is something to hold your attention!

Also watch the games. My home (country) won today - Germany - Portugal, however, the boys have a long way to go. I'll be routing as well for the US tonight, lol. In the end, may the best team win. I spent my teenage years in a soccer crazy town - Dortmund, Rhineland-Westphalia. When the home team won, people took off from work.
Soccer is a beautiful game because you do not need a lot of gear. That's why it is popular around the world. Every boy and girl can play it. I noticed that is has been catching on in the US during the last decades. It's a good thing.

I'm watching right now and just saw the USA player being taken off the field on a stretcher.

That Dempsey guy got kicked in the face and his nose was mush! He went off for treatment and came back. The medics wear more protection than the players! Some tough guys!

While I understand the basics of this sport, but only because it is similar in some respects to ice hockey, I can't get interested in it. The field is too big and the players usually too far apart to even make it interesting to me.
Now I am one that can't stand baseball either and that is because there is not much happening a majority of the time. I understand the strategical parts of what the coaches and manager are doing as far as trying to outwit their opponents. What I don't like is seeing only 2 men doing something the whole game, that being the pitcher and the catcher.
The rest of the game is standing/sitting/spitting and scratching. I like basketball because their is constant movement and while there is a strategy involved in this game, much of what happens has to be a "reaction" by the players without having to think about it.
Can see where some might enjoy playing this in an indoor rink about the size of a hockey rink where there are boards and close boundaries to keep the play moving faster. But outside in those huge fields? Just ain't my thing no matter who is playing.

Gotta mention one of my hockey teams players here. He got a cheap shot check by an opposing player, who just happens to also be one of his best friends as they played on the same team for years.
Anyways after he got up he went to the locker room to get checked out. He missed maybe 1 shift with his line mates and came back and played the rest of the game. Diagnosis later that night? Broken jaw requiring surgery and wiring. He had surgery I believe the next day and he only missed playing 1 game because of the surgery. He had to wear a protective mask similar to a football player, but he was back playing about 4 or 5 days later.
Some hockey players have finished games with a fractured leg, yes completely broken but obviously not a "compound fracture".Broken and smashed noses for hockey players are very common and none of them do not finish the game. The last time of the 8 broken noses I have had over the years was when I was being a Ref. Puck deflection and I didn't have time to move my face and "pop" it went, and to the side.
I went over to where my wife was keeping time and pulled my nose back in place/stuck cotton strips up both nostrils and went back and finished the 1 hour game. Not easy to breath like this but that is what hockey players, and the on-ice officials consider the "hazard of being on the ice and the game".

I really enjoy watching the World Cup. The first time I watched was four years ago. I didn't know much about soccer -- very basic knowledge -- but I found it extremely suspenseful. This is truly a world wide competition with super powers and third world countries represented. It's anyone's game. Today's USA game was intense! I also enjoyed the other games over the last couple of days. I like that you can recognize the players. Plus, you've got to admire their footwork. Oh, and those guys are fit! To run hard like that for two hours in that heat and humidity shows great conditioning. I'm a fan!
