Re: Tylenol or Generic? Extra Strength? Rapid Release?

@Sooner.  Definitely, no Tylenol habit here.  Over the years, I've found it to be totally ineffective and never buy it.  M&Ms make me feel better than Tylenol.

Once when I was supposed to take it after surgery, the surgeon warned me that it can be damaging to kidneys, liver or something.  I wasn't in danger as I never took it.

@Kachina624 Tylenol will stop a migraine in its tracks for me, so I can't be without it.

@vermint ITA, extra strength Excedrin is the only thing that works for me!  Cannot be without it in the house.   I jokingly say I believe Tylenol is a placebo, LOL!

Re: Tylenol or Generic? Extra Strength? Rapid Release?

@Sooner

Well, I can't say I'm a hoarder, but I've tried every variation and have several small bottles of the "experimental" versions.

Some have caffeine, some don't, so time of day determines what I take.

In the morning, up until about 1pm I take a brand or generic version of Excedrin .. 250mg or aspirin, 250mg of acetaminophen and 65 mg caffeine in each tablet.

Later in the day, it's the 500mg or the 650mg time release versions of Tylenol, brand name or generic.

In addition to that, my rheumatologist will prescribe 30 tablets a year of Tylenol with codeine, for pain emergencies.  Each tablet is 300mg aceto and 30mg codeine.

I also have some trial sizes of Advil and a new version of Tylenol which is called Dissolve packs.  They are little packets that you can put on your tongue and don't need water, but I wash it down.  Berry flavored.

I think that's it.

Wait ....  Oh yeah, I'm a heavy user of topical patches or roll on pain relievers with lidocaine.  Sometimes I use Aspercreme as a hand cream at bed time to wake up with usable hands.

My personal experience is that using a topical pain reliever can reduce arthritic pain by about 35%, requiring less pills in my stomach.

Now, I think that's it.  HTH

Re: Tylenol or Generic? Extra Strength? Rapid Release?

I don't hoard but I do prefer Advil gels over Tylenol.  I find the name brands work better than store name or generic.  Maybe its all in my head...Years ago, a doctor I worked with told me to stay away from generic brands as they are inferior to name brands.  If that is true or not who knows.  I guess use what works best for you!!

Have Tylenol capsules in the medicine cabinet. Rarely reach for one, so they expired in 2024, but I won't toss them yet.

What is Excedrin?

Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and a fever reducer. Aspirin is in a group of drugs called salicylates. It works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain, fever, and inflammation. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. It relaxes muscle contractions in blood vessels to improve blood flow.

Acetaminophen is all I'm allowed to take.  Even so, I don't take it very much at all, maybe a handful of times a year.  either extra strength Tylenol or the Walgreens version.  I like caplets or capsules over tablets.

Re: Tylenol or Generic? Extra Strength? Rapid Release?

Since I had my knee replaced on December 13, 2021, I have not needed an OTC pain reliever.

I don't have any pain.

Before that, I preferred Advil, generic version.  My doctor has advised me not to take that med anymore....causes kidney problems. He said take Tylenol, but I haven't had a reason to take it.

I normally buy generic meds if they're available.

So far, I only take Vitamin D every day.  All of my pains are gone since the vitamin D Supplement.  Low levels of that vitamin causes bone pain.  I feel 100% better since taking it.
