I'm in this mid 70's range.  When I had my total knee replacement they kept me in the hospital three days with intense physical therapy (nurse Ratched switched professions), then they sent me to a nursing home for a weekend of totally wasted time.  My only negative is a pacemaker, no diabetes, etc.  I guess I was lucky?  The pain was terrible but I have no after effects and that knee is the strongest one.  Don't skip the PT !
