Since this discussion began, I have had another molar removed.  There is a tooth in front and one behind it.  Back in the day, a bridge would have been done.  I'm getting an implant.  At the extraction, the bone grafting powder was placed and I'm currently in the waiting period for it to harden. Eating is mostly ok, but I did have something hard poke the gum the other day and that wasn't pleasant.  I go back in mid June for the next step in the process which will be putting in the post.
