@chickenbutt   I've had tinnitus many years and usually tune it out. I'm almost deaf in one ear and wear a hearing aide I the other,

   The most annoying sound is those people talking! I made the mistake of trying to hear what was said. One man kept talking like a fast spoken used car salesman

on TV. The only words I could understand were "free shipping and handling, free shipping and handling!" Over and over !  It's been better the last few days with that.

   I was hearing noises from either my dehumidifier in my crawl space or the heating/air conditioning. I had the air conditioner man walk around listening but neither of us heard it. I hope he didn't think I'm crazy.
   The dehumidifier man said it and the sump pump are ok but there was water under the house. I called a plumber, had him listen also. He didn't hear anything but the ducts were unwrapped in a section and I haven't heard it since he fixed it.
   It's hard to tell if I'm hearing noises or it's tinnitus! And I've had the MRI, etc and go to an audiologist who specializes in vertigo, etc. he suggested a Cochlear implant but the hospital involves interstate driving and many trips. Once it's implanted it isn't removed if it won't work for me. So I'm deaf except for tinnitus.

It is my understanding that tinnitus is most often associated with hearing loss. When hearing is "normal" the tinnitus is usually caused by TMJ or trauma. So can one assume that properly fitted hearing aids would reduce or eliminate the tinnitus? Hoping that someone with experience or expertise will enter this discussion.

Thanks to everyone for the sharing.

@granddi

I've worn hearing aids for almost 15 years - custom fitted.

Only difference w/o the hearing aids, the tinnitus is louder because I don't hear anything else.

My solution?  TV every waking hour as I work around the house..  Radio in the car.  I've had CT scans, the works.  I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia, no one has said the tinnitus problem is part of it.  I do know I'm losing some hearing in the affected ear.  I think some major research is needed.  Sympathy for you, I'll be following this thread.

@depglass Fibro can cause tinnitus, I have it also. Woman Frustrated

Mine gets louder when my allergies are acting up. I have heard that Xanax helps tinnitus.

@matty liz I suffer from tinnitus in both ears and my hearing is just at the normal range.  Noise covers up the tinnitus and makes me forget about it.  At home, I keep the TV on at most times.  to go to sleep, I use a white noise machine that sounds like a fan.  I don't like brooks or chirping, I find them distracting and not sleep inducing.  I had a machine from the sharper image that I bought a million years ago, and I loaned it and never got it back. That is when I tried those other white noise machines that don't work.  So I now use an actual fan.  The one I had is still available by Sharper Image but is pricy.  I think a much cheaper one from Amazon called "Marpac Yogasleep Dohm UNO White Noise & Sound Machine, Real Fan Inside" is probably just as good.

I really don't understand why there is no cure by now.  My husband has it pretty severely and I have a much lessor bout of it but most of the time I'm able to ignore.  Don't know how I got mine since I always protected my ears from loud sounds and never used ear phones for music.  When we went to a Tom Cruise movie about 5 years ago the sound was up way too high and it hurt both of our ears.  I had to put tissue in my ears because I couldn't stand it.  Even my husband who is now hard of hearing heard it and found it painful who already had some hearing loss at the time..

Can't tell you how kind each of you are.  I wish me and those affected, to get relief.  I would just like Dr.s to be able to give support on dealing with tinnutis.  It is something that isn't seen but so deeply felt.  Thanks to each of you and if I find worable suggestions, I'll share.  Thank you
