@NickNack I had some very involved and painful gum surgery a few years ago. They started me on Celebrex a few days ahead of time, to get ahead of the pain. I'm hoping they will do something similar with the thyroid surgery because narcotic pain relievers don't agree with me. Keeping my fingers crossed.
But I told my husband that if I could go through childbirth without meds, this should be a breeze lol.

Just to put your mind at ease. I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer in 2003. My surgeon(who it turns out was very good at where he put his incision) removed my entire thyroid. I was in the hospital. Recuperation itime is very short. I, like another poster, had to have the radioactive iodine isotope and be isolated for several days - my husband took care of me. No dogs or cats allowed in the room. They used to do this in the hospital, no more......You will have to take thyroid medication for the rest of your life, they will check on your dosage regularly. I had to have followup scans for a year or two. Now, my thyroid specialist(endochronogist) has my blood checked once a year to make sure there is no evidence of thyroid cells. Due to the fact that I also have had early early stage breast cancer, I was told if you "have to get cancer" papillary thyroid is the one to get. There are some more serious thyroid cancers, but you do not have that. So be positive and you will be fine. God bless you ! P.S. your incision should be on the front of your neck/chest not on the side...Scar fades after a few years.

Had most of my thyroid taken out when I was 39, I am now 56, anyway came home the next day, ate a speghatti dinner that my Mom made, and took one of the pills they sent me home with. The next day I switched to an Advil, took one, and that was it. It really just seemed like a soar throat. You will be amazed how easy it will be.
