Talking About Knee Replacement

[ Edited ]

I know a lot of you have new knees.  I had my right knee done two weeks ago and I'm doing well.  Walking around the house unassisted and just about off of pain meds.  My question for those who had their right knee done how long did it take before you could drive?  My doc said it was up to me but my leg isn't strong enough yet.

Re: Talking About Knee Replacement

In May I had two knees replaced at the same time.  It was easy and I had no problems and almost no pain.  I'd do it again in a minute.

It took care of my knee pain.  I could hardly walk before.  Now no problem.

With me, it's still my back that is driving me crazy.  However, it did help the pain of my back.

Re: Talking About Knee Replacement

I had total right knee replacement a few years back n the month of June when I got out of school. I am a teacher. Had In and outpatient rehab. Didn't drive until middle of September. Didn't feel comfortable. Also, couldn't o stairs for awhile either. Hope this helps.

Re: Talking About Knee Replacement

I had my left knee replaced in 2016; I had trouble with some pain meds--they made me hallucinate. I wasn't allowed to drive until six weeks had passed.

I had the other knee done this year. This time I refused the pain meds, and since they didn't have to work out of my system, I was permitted to drive after only three weeks.

Much better!

Just wanted to say it's SO good to hear of your positive outcomes. I have knee replacement in my future and I'm pretty nervous about it.

Re: Talking About Knee Replacement

Every time I read about how well someone's knee replacement went I'm happy to hear it--but in my case, I had my knee replaced in June '16, and my surgeon messed up...he admitted to not putting something behind my knee cap to prevent irritation......he apologized for his mistake and said it needs to be fixed.....I waited 14 years to finally agree that I needed the surgery.....and this is what I ended up with....his apology...l'm not going through the surgery again.....this was not a new doctor...he has been taking care of my family's ortho needs for over 25 years......so discouraged....hope you are able to drive soon.....

@nana59 - That's terrible.  I feel so bad for you.  I would not want another surgery either.  Best of luck.

@Summer Shine - I was somewht anxious too but it had to be done.  Just make sure you have a good doctor who is up on all the new techniques.

Re: Talking About Knee Replacement

Even tho I was physically able to drive within a few short weeks, I didn't drive until around 2 months; mainly just because I didn't have to.

My husband drove me to PT, and my house was so well stocked I didn't need to go in a grocery store until after 2 months.
