I'm just suffering. I'm too big a chicken to have knee replacement. I know 2 people who've thrown blood clots and died after having it done. I won't risk it.

Wow! I worked for an orthopedic surgeon whose specialty was total knees and total hips. In 17 years I have never heard of anyone dying from this surgery. It is a standard protocol for patients to be placed on Coumadin for two days prior to surgery and the 3 weeks postop with blood draws to check this.

Re: Synvisc One Knee Injection

I had the shots in both needs, and, sadly, there was no positive result.

I have had both knees replaced and I am a happy person.

Best of luck to you.

Re: Synvisc One Knee Injection

I got them years ago. They didn't hurt at all but knees felt very strange for the next day or so. It's difficult to explain but they felt very heavy and it was tough to walk. The injections helped me a lot but my father in law got them and he said they did nothing for him.

Re: Synvisc One Knee Injection

Question please. I have a shot left knee. I have bone on bone, and no meniscus at all. This was result after MRI this past January. However, at the same time I was having leg, hip and back pain. The ortho Dr. said he suspected much of the pain was from back, and sent me to spine doc. He was right. I have 2 slipped discs, a spine that is degenerated with severe stenosis, and somehow in the last 5 years I got scoliosis at 25%. ANYWAY, my question is this..I have not been back to ortho for knee issues although my knee is in pain and hard to use because I have been dealing with back issues first.

Can a person get these shots if they have no meniscus and bone on bone with severe arthritis? I will try anything. I have to deal with spine, and it is one or the other. I am looking for some relief while I work on back. I need surgery, but am trying to do minimal surgery.

Thanks!

Yes, but it's up to the provider you see. You can certainly ask for one. These shots are very common, and are used all the time. I've seen docs do single shots. I've seen some who prefer the multiple course. Most likely because many docs are finding, in clinic, that a single shot is about as effective as the multiple. However, do ask if your insurance covers it before you get it. It may not be covered. Best wishes to you!

Re: Synvisc One Knee Injection

The shot was syndic _the three shot series. Again, it can hurt, though not always, like any shot. It has really helped me for months at a time. The benefit fades with time as six months approach. I have moderate knee arthritis and a torn meniscus. Sometimes it can take several weeks after the final shot to feel full benefit. Good luck! Remember, as far as my research and experience has shown there are no negative long term effects, only possible relief. Please post how you are doing.

Re: Synvisc One Knee Injection

Thanks everyone for your responses. Looks like I have a 50/50 chance of it working. Or maybe it depends on your particular issue. I have almost bone to bone on the right knee but the left knee is in better shape. Actually, the left knee has only started bothering me since I started over stressing it babying the right knee. As was said above, your insurance providers have to approve every option your doctor requests.....I wasn't asked which injection I wanted but I'm glad it's one in each knee verses several. The anticipation of needles is too much, lol. My appt is on August 4th. Thanks everyone.

Re: Synvisc One Knee Injection

I hate to be negative but I had a very bad reaction to the injections. My knees were very inflamed and I could not walk for a few days without serious pain and ended up on pain meds. My ds who has a bad knee from a college football injury just had this injection and also had a bad reaction. I think we are allergic to the rooster stuff that is in it. I also did not get a lot of relief. My knee was bone on bone. I have had a knee replacement...best thing I ever did.

No, that's not being negative, lol. Thanks for your POV. Yes, I was asked if I was was allergic to feathers, chicken, etc. I could only say that I don't think so. I can eat chicken and feathers don't bother me so I assume I'm not allergic. Regarding the knee replacement which I know is in my future.....while a couple of people that I know have them, they walk with a little limp or wobble and although it's better than it was, it doesn't feel like their real knees. I'm trying to avoid that.

Re: Synvisc One Knee Injection

PROLOTHERAPY - Anyone have any experience with this therapy for knee pain.

My husband has had great results with synvisc in one knee but not in the other and

a doctor recently suggested prolotherapy - an injection (sugar based) into the area

surrounding the knee. It is not covered by insurance. Just wondered if anyone has

any knowledge of this. Thanks in advance.
