Hi Sillemee- What is the brand of silica you use? I have started taking Vital Proteins collagen but I guess that is different than your bamboo silicon? I am in the high range of osteopenia and need to do something. Thanks!

Re strontium again, reading further, some report that strontium may increase bone density but make bones more brittle. Maybe this is also why so many on the rx drugs for osteoporosis have femur fractures and others.
This is why I usually end up taking nothing! So discouraging. One says something, another says something else.

Strength training is a great way to protect bone density.

I buy my bamboo silica extract powder from Amazon, this one:
Silica is not the same thing as collagen but it is a substance needed to make collagen into bones.

For everyone taking calcium supplements and/or along with vit d or without, please read about the dangers of strokes, hardening of artieries, heart attacks etc etc for women taking calcium supplements.
This was reported years ago so I don't know why calcium is still the most recommended supplement for bone strength.
I think a lot of these manufacturers just keep producing all these supplements and hoping people won't read up on the effects, meanwhile making millions, or more money off of unsuspecting people.
I used to have books on herbs, supplements, homeopathic etc later realizing that each "natural" supplement or herb, etc also can have detrimental effects.
So please read up on things before taking. The ads and reviews and people's recommendations are not true for everyone and sometimes no one.
The same with prescription medicine that doctors routinely prescribe. Some drs are knowledgable and careful especially when prescribing for the elderly but some are not. Some are familiar with supplements, herbs etc but so many are not.
So as much as we can read and advocate for ourselves, that is the best we can do even though there is so much conflicting info it is hard to know what is true. It is good to read the reliable medical info rather than any site.

I take calcium for the last 20 years and at 70 my bone density remains in a normal range, I also take KAL silica tablets, mainly for my hair.

@Shelbelle May I ask how much calcium per day? I was told yrs ago to take 1200mg's but stopped due to the information posted about it calcifying the arteries. Now I only take 400mg's to 600mg's max per day broken up with my 3 meals. Also my diet has calcium so I add that in trying to hit my total of 1200mg's between food and supplements.
I have osteopenia and am trying all that I can to keep it at least from progressing over time. I do take silica to daily. This year I will have a bone DEXA to see how things are looking. Hoping for the best.

I would love to find something that helps bone density other than Boniva-type products. My mother had spontaneous fracture of her femur while taking bizphosphinate (sp?) prescription. I know of two others with the same issue.
I refuse to take any drug for osteoporosis. Two dentists said they would not work on any patient who took drugs for osteoporosis, due to the necrosis of the jaw....not to forget about spontaneous fractures.

About 10 years ago my doctor told me to take a supplemental called Bone Density by Pure Synergy. It has Vit D, calcium, K-1 (needed to keep calcium going to bones and not arteries), magnesium, strontium and silica as well as other asorited minerals and plant extracts. It's not cheap but easier than taking a variety of individual supplements and I think the proportion of minerals, etc are designed to work together.
