Have any of you ever stopped taking statins cold turkey?  If so any issues?  Thanks in advance.

I did on the advise of my Dr.  Were causing my liver numbers to go up  First tried changing from 40mg to 20mb - numbers still going up.  then tried 20 very other day - till higher liver numbers.

Taken off statins as blood tests showed numbers increasing due to medications.  No statins, liver numbers now their pre-statin normal.

As can be with meds, can be helpful, also can be harmful.

I have considerable joint pain from 10mg of atorvastatin daily but fear going off it. I have had 3 heart attacks prior to not taking statins. My last heart attack was May of 2017 and my angiogram of 2023 came back completely clean. No blockages. I don't want to rock the boat, so I continue taking atorvastatin.

When I asked about stopping atorvastatin, my cardiologist suggested that it may result in another heart attack due to cholesterol building up again. However, anecdotal evidence from me may be completely wrong for you @Junebug54 . Ask your physician what they think is best for you.

Good luck!

Never have taken a Statin. I would not stop cold turkey if I did.

@Trinity11   My daughter is a type 1 diabetic for many years.  Her endocrinologist prescribed atorvastatin as a preventative for heart disease.  She took it for about 3 months or so and developed leg muscle pain and joint pain in her legs.  He said that was a common side effect of that medication, so he switched her to Plavastatin and since that switch, no more leg or joint pain.  Might be worth mentioning that statin to your doctor.

I took 20mg. Simvastatin for quite a long time but began experiencing much discomfort in my legs.  My doctor had me stop (yes cold turkey) and I began taking Zetia.  After about 4 months my legs improved.  Going for my blood work since taking Zetia in a month so we'll see how I am.  My cholesterol was not so terribly high to begin with.

I was on Crestor and stopped cold turkey after discussing it with my Dr.  A year or so later, we tried the generic Simvastatin and I've been on it for several years with no problems.

I was taking Lovastatin for a while and it barely brought my LDL down plus it caused my A1C to go up above normal which set me up for taking another drug to lower my blood glucose. I had enough of that so I told my doc I was going to take a different approach and change some lifestyle choices...diet and exercise. I stopped the statins one day, cold turkey, when I got my LDL back down and today I don't take drugs for either high LDL or high A1C.  Changes in diet and exercising more solved the problem for me.
