So much for the flu shot.....

My husband gets the flu shot yearly since hes young b/c he is severely asthmatic. Well guess what? He has the flu, and he has it bad.

We saw the Dr. b/c in additon to the regular flu symptoms (which are bad enough), he cannot breathe since he also has asthma it is afffecting that. He had to have 3 breathing treatments @ the Doctor just to get him to breathe OK. (and he has a nebulizer at home). Also we had to go in the back door to see the Dr. (as to not spread germs in the waiting room), and were told the flu got a late start this year.

Yes I know the flu shot isnt 100% but this is the 3rd time hes gotten the flu over the years even though he gets the shot. I do not get the flu shot due to a fomer egg allergy. So I expect I will be next. I hope not. I havent had the flu for 10 years and I dont want it!

He is trying to sleep now. (I am upstairs in the next room on my laptop, and I keep checking on him). He is an otherwise healthy guy overall but it scares me when he cant breathe because as a kid he had a collapsed lung due to his asthma and the flu is making the asthma worse as I said.

Re: So much for the flu shot.....

I got the flu shot for years especially when I worked in the medical field. I never got the flu but often got bronchitis, even pneumonia. Last year I messed around and didn't get it. It was the first time in about five years that I didn't get a bad upper respiratory infection. So I didn't get one this year. So far, so good, knock on wood.

It may be a severe cold and not the flu or  have both at the sam time. i am on day 8  of a cold.  I am right at the end where my nose is clear but i have the dizzyness, raspy  voice  and cough. I di dnot go to the dr and Im worried that  I will get written up for absenteesim at work. I missed 3 days of work and took 1 tardy. I only get this bad  maybe once every 2-6 years so it hit me hard

Re: So much for the flu shot.....

That's frightening for sure and my prayers for his quick recovery.  The Flu shots are funny because just a slight variation/mutation in the Flu strain out there and even if you had the shot, you can get the Flu.  I get the shot every year as well and have had the Pneumonia shots since I was 45 (Pulmonary Sarcoidosis).... but I've been lucky in that I've not been sick in many years.....

My Dad nearly died as a baby in the great Flu epidemic of 1918.  They said he wouldn't live through the night.  Thank goodness he did.... but the flu is serious stuff and they've come a long way in helping people stay well with the vacinations today.  They aren't perfect.... but I still get one every year no matter what.

Since each year the flu shot is based on their best guess as to which strains will be predominate for the year, there is always going to be miscalculations. I believe either last year or the year before it was essentially useless-their predictions were wayyyy off. And just because a family member gets it, you won't necessarily if you take appropriate precautions. I never get the flu shot but I haven't had the flu for 32 years.

Did his doctor confirm the Flu diagnosis with the Rapid Flu Test or the swab?

As you say, the shots don't come with a warranty. Hope you keep from getting it.

@Reba055 I haven't taken the flu shot in over 15 years and have not had any problems. I appreciate those of you who work in the medical field, but I try as best as I can to keep my immune system strong to combat whatever comes along. I also don't take antibiotics, unless there is a surgery I'm undergoing.

I know there may come a time when my system can't combat a strain of something that is going around, but since I've been fortunate enough not to have been sick a single day in the last 15 years, I'm going to stick with staying away from shots that I may or may not need, and that may or may not work.

Considering that I have traveled to almost 50 countries, many of which were areas in jungles or swamp-like areas, I feel fortunate to have survived without the "recommended shots" that most doctors want to prescribe for here and abroad.

Trying to find some wood to knock on! LOL!

It's kept me safe from the flu for a very long time. I'll keep getting the shot.
