Re: Sleeping Pill

[ Edited ]

@sophiamarie  I'm not sure why WebMD says that except that it's a good drug for insomnia related to depression. Perhaps that's the official FDA approval regarding insomnia. You know how those things go. It can and is/has been used at low doses for insomnia for years and years.

Not a proponent for wiki per se as it often has erroneous information, but just at quick glance they seem to be more accurate for Trazadone.

I have worked in the medical field and Trazdone is used for sleep for a variety of reasons.

Edit:  there's a very good article on Trazadone on consumerreports.org. Sorry I can't post the link, but you can probably Google. Also you can see comments by people using it for sleep 😉

I've tried several things. The BEST was retiring from my job in human resources. However, I have found that melatonin works as does CALM. It is a powder you mix with water; it is usually at a natural food store or section of a grocery store. Both of these are over the counter.

Alka Seltzer Plus for nightime also works for me. I never travel without it.

As another poster said, many of the OTC drugs have diphenhydramine. I found out the hard way that this ingredient has the OPPOSITE effect on me....instead of helping me sleep, I become agitated. I always check for that ingredient now, but it seems to work for many people.

Deep breathing may help. Search for 'breathing exercises Andrew Weil.' There is one exercise called 4-7-8  that has been helpful.

I like ambien too, can sleep 8 hours on it.  I get anxiety about work the next day and have two older dogs that have a lot of issues and wake me up at 5:30 am!

Fortunately, I have no trouble sleeping. I have, on occasion, had a cup of Sleepy Time tea by Celestial Seasonings, which quickly put me in the mood. My vet recommended 5mg of Melatonin for my Golden when he couldn't sleep after my husband passed, and it worked very well.

********************************************************************************************LOL - Maybe you have taken a slower glance at wiki - because the very first line says "The primary use of Trazodone is the treatment of major depression."

In what part of the medical field did you work, btw?

Not prescription, Costco brand Kirkland called Sleep Aid. 2 bottles that come in a box. Inexpensive. I have trouble falling asleep, then staying asleep. When I first starting taking them I only took 1/2 a pill. No groggy effect the next morning. I've tried a variety of Dr prescribed sleeping pills and I did not do well with them. The only prescribed sleeping pill that worked for me was Restoril. My Dr said they are sleep addictive and a person builds tolerance to them quickly. Dr will only prescribe Restoril once in a while and a very low dose.

I have to agree, SLEEP AID...2 pack by Kirkland, i have tried at least 20 diff. sleep aids, since my 40's I all of a sudden have issues sleeping, sometimes up for 2-3 days, this is the ONLY one that will get me to sleep for at least a few hours, I too started with 1/2 but notice much better results if I am not stubborn and just take a full one!
