I have heard more than one clinician involved in testing drugs that carry a raised risk of herpes zoster as a side effect say that the current vaccine, which is live, is only about 50% effective.

The good news is that GlaxoSmithKline expects to have its deactivated (non-live) zoster vaccine, Shingrix, approved soon, so it should be available in 2018. I've also heard (from private clinician interviews, so not in print) that because it's reportedly so much more effective than the current vaccine, there may be a scheme to re-vaccinate people who got the existing shot. I don't know whether the insurance coverage threshold will be lowered, and have no idea how it will be priced.

A deactivated shingles vaccine is great news for people whose medical conditions made a live vaccine inadvisable.

I had the shingles last oct and it was terrible. They extended from the base of my spine and went all thru my privates to the front area on one side. I was told it is very rare to get them there. I plan to get the vaccine when my year long immunity runs out this fall. I never want a repeat of that experience!

@SeaMaiden  Your insurance covered it?  Wow, I didn't think it was, and I know it's over $200 for the shot.  May I ask what insurance you have?

@2blonde  yes...100%. We have BlueCross BlueShield.

@SeaMaiden- did you have to have a prescription for the vaccine or just show up at the pharmacy and ask for it?

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@Nightowlz

Another needle phobe here, and I too have the postherpetic neuralgia from a shingles bout several years ago. I've had shingles three times.

The only thing I like about my protruding veins is they only need one try to stick me for a blood draw.

I'm glad you got some good sleep last night,

is the CBD lotion you need a prescription for..I wonder if it helps with knee pain ?

Re: Shingles vaccine

This is one vaccine I insisted on getting, I never get a flu shot, or tetnus,  but shingles is the worst. My doc's office has it on hand, got it at 60, insurance paid for it.

@gidgetgh  no prescription needed . My insurance sends out reminders to go get the shots if you have not already gotten them....also my Doctor also suggested getting it.  It is just one of the many things my nsurance covers  100% including colonoscopies and mammograms and Dexa scans for bone density.

@Azcowgirl No prescription. I read about the CBD lotion on the wellness forums so I ordered it. I was in pain so figured it was worth a try. I ordered online at Lord Jones. You have to click to go to their site for products with or without the THC. It's not legal here so I had to enter the non-thc site to order. It's in a pump dispenser & dispenses 2mg per pump. I guess a lot of people use it for pain. It's good for inflammation.

My knees bother me after I run errands since I'm walking so fast when I do them. I used the Penetrex on my knees & it helped quite a bit. The Penetrex says it aids in healing not just covering the pain.

Not sure of your knee pain but the CBD is supposed to be good for joint pain, muscle aches, arthritis etc. It took me a while before I ordered any because I did not want any with chemicals etc in it. Takes a while to do the old homework.
