Has anyone ever heard of this procedure? My step daughter has a tear in her knee and the orthopedic surgeon told her when he fixed the tear he could shave the arthritis as well!
Wonder if anyone has head of this and also wondering if it can be done in the hip area? My husband has an appointment in January with his ortho doctor and will ask him..just curious.

The Ortho can remove "shave" the damaged tissue from the knee during the Arthroscopic procedure. It's usually done on less damaged tissue or younger patients. More damaged tissue usually requires more extensive surgery and usually happens on older people (such as me ! with 2 knee replacements on the right and 1 on the left)
The decision on what procedure is appropriate for your husbands hip should be discussed with his MD when he's seen in January. Best wishes for his and your step daughter's full recovery.

I had torn meniscus surgery almost 3 years ago, my surgeon said there was arthritis in there but never mentioined getting rid of it, but I sure wish he had.

@Shelbelle I had arthroscopic surgery (meniscus tear) in 1996. The surgery was a success; however, when I again started having trouble with that knee (maybe about 2017) the surgeon told me (he was the one who eventually replaced the knee in 2019) that he doesn't like arthroscopic surgery because it often CAUSES ARTHRITIS that, in my case, eventually worsened to the point where the knee wore out.

My initial mri in 2021 showed the tear plus the arthritis, so I got rid of the meniscus pain but now deal witjh the arthritis, so I have never really been pain free, I did get 3 Synvisc gel shots, and think I will go for another one soon.

From the responses this is a procedure done mostly for the knee....I was hoping it might help the arthritis in my husband's hip....he will discuss with his doctor in January.
I had never heard of this procedure until my step daughter mentioned it.

When I had a cheilectomy (foot surgery to remove a callus from big toe bottom) my surgeon said she could remove some arthritis around the area as well. No particular name for it but assume it may be similar to what you are referring to. Unfortunately the callus came back though smaller. No more surgery for me. I resort to using the round bandaid type cushions under my toe. Works fine.
