Has anyone found some relief from sciatica? Found a way to lessen the pain without resorting to powerful pain killers? Any particular exercise or tips to be able to sleep at night with it? It's been about 3 weeks and nothing so far is really making a difference. Thanks....

Nothing I did touched mine at all.  Had to take the steroids, which helped a lot to lessen it and then it slowly, slowly went away.  It was SO painful I thought I'd lose my mind it hurt so badly.  Mine was the actual sciatic nerve that flared up,  On my upper left thigh in the back of my leg.  Mine was not in my back as are so many but the sciatic nerve runs the full area, down the back, down both sides of the rear and down the leg.  Nasty pain.  I hope you find some relief.  I let mine go too long before I went to the doctor.  Good luck~!

I had just one horrible episode that literally left me unable to move .  I was transported to the hospital where I stayed for 2 days.  Tramadol was what I was given.

Thankfully I have never had another episode like that one.

If you can pinpoint the part of the back causing the pain . I have found the salon pas lidocaine patches effective .

This is only for mild sciatica .Hope you get some relief soon .

Hello my friend,

Such an interesting road you traveled with your quad injury.  Those injuries are quite major, as you know, and take quite a long while to heal.  Though not a muscle tear, I sustained a major bone bruise while performing a flying eagle/hip circle on the uneven parallel bars in college and the resultant hematoma plus accompanying pain took over a year to heal.  Though I'd never be able to walk with a normal gait again, let along re-join the fencing team.

My nephrologist placed me on a statin maybe 2 years ago, indicating it is now protocol for chronic kidney failure patients, of which I am one.  That's due to me having taken Mobic for 12 years for severe chronic migraine.

I totally get what you're referring to regarding statins and muscle stretching, etc.  Thing with me is - I inherited the gene for hypermobility from one or the other side of the family, so have to be very careful, because even when I'm in the throes of a new injury, such as I am now, this hypermobility has probably been one of the causative agents of my present disability & pain - with joints having over-extended their anatomic parameters for decades.  Boy, that was a horrible sentence!

Upon first reading the discussion earlier, referenced AllMEDx and found a study:

"Effect of an increased dosage of statins on spinal degenerative joint disease: a retrospective cohort study"

Though I have the 10 page study in hard copy by my side, a   brief conclusion reads:

"Our study's findings clearly indicated higher dosage of statins can reduce the incidence of spinal degenerative joint disease in patients with hypercholesterolaemia, and it can be beneficial for people with a higher risk of spine degeneration."

Though this has no direct bearing on the current thread discussion, I thought it interesting.

Wishing you, Cindy and all of your fur babies well.

I love my gel belt from amazon!  Less than $20.00.  I can freeze it or heat it.  Of course with sciatic nerves, it's freeze!

@lulu1, I am happy to read that you are OK now. I understand what you mean about not being able to move. Last week, I came very close to going to the ER.

If you were given Tramadol, it gives me hope that at least I have a prescription for it in the house and I will take it if it gets bad.

@Q4u

Sciatica is caused by that nerve being compromised in the spine(back). It runs from the glutes(butt) all the way down the back of the leg to the heel. It is not only the BIGGEST nerve in the human body, it is also the LONGEST, hence one of the most painful.

What you and I experienced with severe Sciatica was/is called REFERRED PAIN, the source of which IS the spine(back). With mine I continued working my heavy lifting job, and also continued to play hockey. To say "I waited too long", for me is a big understatement.

I ended up spending the best part of a month in the hospital that ended with spinal surgery to remove both my ruptured L-5 and ruptured  S-1 spinal discs. This also permanently damaged the sciatic nerve in my right leg, that still goes numb on me almost 45 years later.

Many do not know about "referred pain", which means "where a person hurts" is not really the source of their pain.  Shoulder pain can be a "referred pain" from the Cervical area of the Spine, nothing to do with the shoulder structure.

Compared to my "waiting too long", you were/are fortunate that your Sciatica "slowly, slowly went away". Way too many that suffer this extreme pain are not as fortunate. Take care of your back(spine) as that is the source of Sciatica, not the butt or the leg.

Stay well now,

Sorry that you are in pain.  I have multiple back, pelvic, spine, neck issues.  For me, PT is the key. They can use different modalities to treat from ice or heat, ultrasound, massage, traction to exercises for stretching and strengthening.

I am currently not in therapy for my back, but for post op shoulder surgery.  I absolutely love my PT, and everyone else in the office.  They are making things fun.  The other patients are enjoyable, too.  I've been there since mid April, and due to other issues that have popped up, will be there for another month or so.  The joke is that I am taking the scenic route on my recovery.

Another option if the above fails to help you is to see a pain management specialist and see if getting an injection would be beneficial.  I wish you the best.

One of the best solutions for this is a padded toilet seat! As we get older we sit down harder (women especially) with a part of our body that was not built for this. Nerves get pinched and squished.  An old friend recommended this "cure" to me years ago and after I laughed (but had DH replace ours) and within 3 or 4 days the pain totally stopped. Maybe help you too. I am surprised more Doctors don't tell anyone this. It has helped everyone I've told.

Hi Nightowlz, thank you for clarifying what I can post. I purchased Kratom from Kratora once...my first time. It was excellent but a little more expensive than I like. After that, I found Happy Hippo, and I have purchased from them ever since. They ship lightening fast...I mean immediately (hey QVC...), and they offer weekly sales that you then get extra percentages off on if you use a bank draft or Bitcoin to pay. I signed up for a Bitcoin account just to purchase from HH and get 20-30% extra off. I cannot say enough good things about them. They answer customer service questions promptly and try to be as helpful as they can without stepping on legality issues. I hope this info helps someone. Kratom was life-changing for me, and that is astonishing considering I take it only two to four times per month. As a side note, I do not appear to have an addictive personality in general, but I have not seen anything that would cause me to think this would be addictive at all. Just use common sense and caution if you do try it. Take care!
