Are you comfortable with sharing why surgery is not an option for you? My mother had three maybe four back surgeries and each one just made her worse. I mentioned possibly looking into back surgery to my dad the other day and he let out a loud firm NO! I didn't know ablation was an option for back pain.

@monicakm I consulted with an ortho surgeon and he told me I'm nowhere near needing surgery.

He sent me to the pain mgt doc I'm seeing on a regular basis.

The epidural shots are helping me. The pain mgt doc is the one who manages my injections, including the ablation procedure.

I saw a neurosurgeon recently. He told me that back surgery rarely works. From friends, family and acquaintances, I've never known of any that had successful back surgeries.

Over the years I've had several ablation in my lumbar spine and they've been ssuccessful. I also had many successful nerve block injections.

I've never had sedation with the nerve blocks. When I told my doctor I couldn't have an ablation because I had no one to drive me, he said he knew me and knew I didn't need sedation. He said most people were given sedation because of anxiety caused by the idea of the procedure. So all my ablations, including the ones on my neck have been done sedation free.

I also have severe sciatica on both sides. My first epidural was extremely painful. My doctor said that was rare so recommended propofol. I had the next epidural with propofol and had no problems. I was in and out in no time and was able to walk standing up straight when I got home. I felt great but knew I would be able to sleep if I laid down and I did. I've had propofol with colonoscopies and cataract surgeries with no after effects. Great naps after being given propofol.

@kze I can tell you about 1, who is my husband. He has had 2 back surgeries. First one removed 2 ruptured lumbar discs the second one to remove 1 other ruptured lumbar disc
He got back to his running usually 4-5 days a week without any back issues and ice skating several times a week

There is a new procedure that if successful lasts 5 to 6 years. It's called Intracept. It has a longer name but that's the brand name. My friend just had it and it worked for her. It has a roughly 65% success rate. I'm not sure if it would apply to you. Google it and maybe ask your pain doctor about it.

@monicakm. Probably because I have stenosis, arthritis and a bulging disc. I've consulted two surgeons. I don't want to risk being worse.
