Wow.  I am just starting training for this and many other services at the Councel Of Aging.  This service has been around for awhile.

I am a Senior and wanted to do something to help in the community, so yesterday I received a call for classes to start in Sept.  The volunteers go through six week of classes to help in different areas and then you chose what service you feel you would be best.  You are trained on different subjects about how to communicate with Seniors in different areas.

Some are isolated, some just need a check in call, some need a ride to the grocery store or Dr. office, etc. Some need to learn how to use a Ipad or phone.  There are different needs. I'm excited about this, because I am a very old, but capable Senior, still able to help. which in turn helps me not to be isolated and give back to the place that has helped me.

When I went looking for assisted living for my mother (who never used it), they all seemed to have some sort of a system where a resident could let them know they were okay each morning. 

My mother stayed in her condo and eventually used an aide but would call her friend who lived in the next building just to check in.

I think such a service is great for those who need it!

Years ago, after the house sold, my mother moved into a senior apartment complex.  The apartments had an enclosed hallway and then each had a door with a window and shade.   

(I'm not describing this well, but I thought it was a very pretty set up.)

People closed their shades at night, but it was agreed upon that the shades should be drawn half way up by 11am, so people knew the resident was up and active.

Neighbors could look out for each other without having to knock on doors.

I think it's a good idea that NEIGHBORS keep track of each other!

HOWEVER...I would be wary of a "service" that keeps track of me.   You never know W H O can get ahold of that information...

I never heard of this.  Good for seniors and disabled people who are alone in this world.

Wish they had something like that here..no neighbors..My kids text  or call everyday..but they live almost 3 hours away.

I am also in MD and I see promos for this service all the time on my TV, great if needed.

Thanks to all who responded to my post.  I'm still looking for just a "check in" service.  I don't need one to have visits or phone chats.  The Maryland service sponsored by the state seems perfect.  I live in NY and so far I don't see that they offer anything like that but I'll keep looking.  Thanks again.

      Yrs ago, I was looking into some kind of 'check in' service.  All I could find were plans that cost money.

       So, I worked out a 'check in' service with my daughter, who lives 7 hrs away.  I text her every morning; it's the first thing I do after waking up.   If she doesn't hear from me by 9 am, she contacts someone.  This plan works well for us...
