Years ago, after the house sold, my mother moved into a senior apartment complex. The apartments had an enclosed hallway and then each had a door with a window and shade.
(I'm not describing this well, but I thought it was a very pretty set up.)
People closed their shades at night, but it was agreed upon that the shades should be drawn half way up by 11am, so people knew the resident was up and active.
Neighbors could look out for each other without having to knock on doors.
