Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

@pdlinda   it obviously is not an emergency surgery and I personally would reschedule it for an earlier day of the week

for the very reason you have stated

@mrshckynut   No, it's not emergency surgery.  I agree with you about scheduling.  Thank you.

It sounds like you have already decided @pdlinda so anyone's opinion at this point is irrelevant.  Even so, your surgeon's time off and intrusion on his weekend is not your responsibility.  He is being paid a very large amount of money to perform your surgery. Being interrupted for an emergency on his time off comes with the territory. If any complication is not an emergency the on call doctor can handle it.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

i would bet they have scheduled on Fridays, for a long time. If it was an issue, they would have changed it. I think they do consider type of surgery, age of patient and how responsible the pt. is (will they follow directions, etc.). I would go ahead with it. You have time to ask your surgeon, if you are concerned.

I've had several surgeries & most doctors have certain set days & times they do surgery & set times for office hours.

A couple of doctors performed surgeries on Friday mornings so they could have the afternoon off & a longer weekend. They have reasons for the times & days they do surgery.

If you have problems after, just go to the nearest hospital.

@pdlinda

Since I am an inveterate worrier, I would rather have surgery during the week.

It is not always a possibility, but if available that's what I would choose.

Sending you good wishes no matter what you decide.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

Just had major surgery, a knee replacement, at Cleveland Clinic on a Friday. I was first out of the gate at 7:30 and went home that same evening. Surgeon had certain days to operate at location where everything set for joint replacements like ortho care teams and robots. Long ago I was allowed to pick my month and week but not my day or time. Excellent follow up care during all days after surgery. Don't be concerned and good luck!

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

Surgeons typically have a PA or another provider scheduled for coverage post-op. Anytime I had complications, either the covering provider either sent me to a SNF, The ER, a specialist or prescribed another Rx. I've had many surgeries, 4 major and two day surgeries.

I only two surgeons call and follow-up with me to see how I was doing. Performing Neurosurgeon called me night after my first lumbar surgery 16 yrs ago. was a Friday surgery. Couple days later, my left leg ballooned up. Office staff instructed me to see a Vascular MD. Dr had done his job: the surgery. Same deal with my THR. Ortho did hip - Post-OP: Hospital Stay - 5 days.  SNF: one day. At home - Legs ballooned up - sent me to the ER.

Agree 100% with @JeanLouiseFinch .  I would not be worrying about his weekend plans.

@ellaphant   Yes, I am the first surgery in the morning; however, it's FRIDAY MORNING!

My concern is not getting home on time...it's having some problem on Friday night, Saturday or Sunday.

Please don't worry, if you have any problems there is ALWAYS a sugeon covering.

If you are that anxious, reschedule for another day but aim for that 1st procedure.

Good luck!
