Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

I would try to change it for the middle of the week. Even if you get someone on the phone from the office on the weekend they will tell you to go to the emergency room. If that is the case the emergency room is limited in what they are allowed to do if the doctor has no rights there.

Often is not up to the patient to pick the day, some surgeons only operate one or 2 days a week and rest of time is in office. When I had my knee tear fixed I had no choice but on a Monday.

@Shelbelle is correct. Non-emergency surgeries in hospital are scheduled by the operating room availability. Surgeons who get OR times have certain times assigned to them.

You wont be able to pick and choose usually. Speak to your surgeon's office as soon as you can to find out availability.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

@Shelbelle   You may be right.  This surgeon mostly performs these procedures in various locations where he has a "surgery center."  (I thought of Joan Rivers and insisted on a hospital).  It's possible he only operates on a Friday there because he has no office hours on that day.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

@LizzieInSRQ   Thank you.  That makes a lot of sense.  I'll call the scheduler next week and she'll let me know.  I bet he only books surgeries in the HOSPITAL on a Friday but maybe does the procedure at a "surgery center" on other days of he week.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

When i had my cataracts done I had my choice of a surgi ctr or a hospital, I chose the hospital, my eye doc only has hospital privileges there one Tues each month, that is how tight these schedules can be.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

I have had various surgeries on assorted days of the week.  If something happens your "coverage physician" is qualified to make a diagnosis and treat you.  If it's serious enough he/she knows how to reach the surgeon.

My late gather was a terrific surgeon. Always said, request a day when you can

be first on the surgeon's schedule. Doctors and nurses are fresh and ready to go. Otherwise numerous things can back up your surgery. I've had 2 out patient

procedures. Always first in and home by 1:30 or 2.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

@Shelbelle   I'll call the scheduler and get the reason and then see what my options are.

It's day surgery.

It's a procedure.

It's not major surgery (like my 3 joint replacements).

However, if something untoward should occur I want to be sure I have all my concerns addressed.  It was mentioned by another poster that my surgeon may not have privileges in the hospital 5 mins from my home so I really wouldn't want to face going to the hospital where the procedure is being done because it's VERY FAR away.

@JeanLouiseFinch   I have an excellent whose father was also an excellent surgeon.  He's very skilled and experienced.  He comes highly recommended.

However, I really would like to avoid having to interrupt his weekend with his young family to attend to anything that might arise with my recovery.

Re: SCHEDULING DAY SURGERY ON A FRIDAY

@ellaphant   Yes, I am the first surgery in the morning; however, it's FRIDAY MORNING!

My concern is not getting home on time...it's having some problem on Friday night, Saturday or Sunday.
