Rite Aid closing store in Michigan and Ohio

App. 27 more stores in Michigan and Ohio. We were in one yesterday to pick up an Rx for our pet. The shelves are very empty. Also word on the street is that the one in our small town is about to close July 17.

Walgreens is closing stores, too.

ETA-

One of our local WG closed after 20 years in one particular location. That area has been crime-ridden for a long time and has put that WG in a bad situation. Other than that the store appeared to be busy all of the time. I really don't blame them for closing that store. It was a magnet for crime.

They are closing one in the small city I live in.  That will leave the west side of the city without quick access to a pharmacy.

My Rite Aid closed a year or more ago in Pa. It was right across the street from a Walgreens and near CVS, Walmart, Wegman's, Giant and Weis which all have pharmacies.

According to an article in the Detroit Free Press on 6/20/24, workers at Rite Aid say that they're closing ALL stores in Michigan and transferring the prescriptions to Walgreen.

There are a couple of them in my town, and they're both dumps.

I'm so sorry to hear that.  My Rite Aid was taken over by Wal Greens, was open for a couple more years before finally closing.  The pharmacist told me Wal Greens was buying up a bunch of Rite Aid stores.  If they don't make enough money to suit them, they close.  This really hurt me.  I'd been a customer for over 35 years.  Now, I have to travel nearly 45 minutes to the nearest Wal Greens.😔

We only had one Rite Aid in our town but 3 CVS, 2 Walgreens, and a Walmart.  The Rite Aid was closed after Walgreens purchased it.

Re: Rite Aid closing store in Michigan and Ohio

We have lost a few pharmacies in the past year and it appears that there are more soon to follow that trend. One of our oldest independent pharmacies had to close as well as a small independent chain of a dozen or so. It's so sad, apparently payments they receive for many prescription drugs, as determined by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), are far less than the cost of the medications. A local pharmacist who is a close personal friend asked me to take one of my RXs to a big box store, he could not afford to fill it - it cost him $1000 more than he was reimbursed everytime he did so . . .

Re: Rite Aid closing store in Michigan and Ohio

I remember years ago when Rite Aid took over Perry Drugs and locations sprouted up on nearly every street corner.  That was about the same time CVS really took off.  There was WAY too much competition and I'm surprised it took this long for someone to cry "uncle".  CVS has always been more convenient for me so I'm glad they seem to be surviving.
