Restless leg syndrome is truly miserable and shouldn't be lightly dismissed. I've had a few episodes and dread the thought of another one. It isn't called "restless leg syndrome" for no reason.

maybe you shouldn't be so dismissive--consider this:

Doctors aren't always helpful and many have a narrow view for treatments.

Yes, an awful feeling. I had restless legs for a few years. What helped me was to cut down on caffeine. I always looked forward to a cup of coffee or strong tea after dinner.

I now have only a VERY weak cup of tea before 8 PM.

If I make the tea stronger or have it later at night the restless legs start up again.

This worked for me but I think most of the posters' suggestions here are worth considering.

My daughter has had this problem for years and I suggested that she try a magnesium supplement. I have taken it for help with migraines and it really helped me. She has been taking it a few hours before bedtime and restless leg feeling is gone. I know this is something that worked for her, but why not give it a try.

It sounds like there is not just one treatment that works for everyone; trial and error I suppose. My sister has it and it makes her miserable. She tried everything, but she said cutting out caffeine after 5 pm has helped her...hasn't gone away completely, but it rarely happens now. I have read several places that placing a bar of unwrapped soap under the sheets at the foot of the bed has helped many people. Don't laugh....you may try anything if nothing else works, I read about this on The Peoples Pharmacy online. Have found lots of helpful info there.

I suffered with restless leg syndrome for several years before I finally figured out what it was.  I discussed it with my doctor, and she prescribed ropinirole.

I no longer have RLS due to taking prescription drugs for it.  I would strongly recommend to anyone who has RLS to discuss it with your doctor.  I can't imagine any doctor dismissing this.  There are many different drugs that will stop it and allow you to be able to sleep at night.

Gabapentin is what a study at Mayo Clinic recommends.  I now take gabapentin and .25 mg. ropinirole.
