@LilacTree  I just got over a UTI and I found a bottle called CranRx in my supermarket which has cranberry and the d-mannose along with Vitamin C.  It was only around $10.  It may be worth picking up if you can find it out your way.

@LilacTree  Hi - I can relate to UTIs, since I've had my share too.  I came down with one yesterday.  I went to the doctor and he put me on Cipro.  I like you have got sick from Macrobid in the past.  I have never heard of AZO.  I am waiting to hear the results of the culture to see what kind of bacteria has caused the infection this time.  I hope I don't have to change medications.

@katte

The only thing about AZO is, like pyridium, it stains and there's no way to get the stain out, so one has to be very careful in the bathroom when on it.  If you don't already, use protective pads, or the AZO will stain (and ruin) all of your underwear.

Re: Regarding AZO for UTIs

[ Edited ]

As I posted in the other thread, I too was diagnosed Friday with a UTI.  This was after having one the Monday before x-mas.  That time I was put on Bactrim for 3 days and I don't think it got rid of the infection.  Plus it made me very nauseated.

Last Thursday night I was miserable so I took Azo.  The one thing with that pill is is WILL affect a urinalysis.  So while they detected blood in my specimen, they couldn't get a good read on anything else.  They put me on Macrobid for 7 days and gave me an RX for Pyridium which worked much much faster for me than AZO did.  AZO wasn't really working.

I received a telephone call Monday night from the clinic telling me to make sure to take the full 7 days of Macrobid because my culture came back and it was growing bacteria.  Today is Wednesday and I have faithfully been taking that antibiotic and I still feel like I have the infection.  Sometimes I'm fine but last night I was very uncomfortable again.

Generally Cipro is the only thing that knocks a UTI out for me and I may need to be put on that.  I am in between doctors so kept going to the Cleveland Clinic Express Clinic.  But I have an initial consult with a new doc on Monday so I will bring this up to her.

I have read in various health journals that there is no definite research that cranberry does anything to help with UTIs or our bladders.  My doctor suggests loads of water.

@Lipstickdiva  A few years ago, I went to the doctor with a specimen and told the nurse I was taking AZO and she said it didn't matter.  I just googled this:

"All Azo does is make a bad test worse. As far as medical testing goes, it won’t affect a thing but it might help ease the pain while you get a hold of your doctor. And anyone who tells you that you can’t have your urine tested while taking Azo doesn’t understand testing for a bladder infection."

Another product that is just the same as AZO is Uristat.  I find it doesn't upset my stomach like AZO does.  These are both for pain, take them with with your antibiotic, not in place of it.  A couple days should stop the discomfort and you can discontinue them.  Do not stop the antibiotic until all capsules are gone.  One of my friends is a pharmacist and she is emphatic about this.

I can tell you, unequivocally, that CranRich and Cranberry Benefits have helped me..tremendously. This is not a placebo effect. I started with Cystex Liquid. It was very expensive and always out of stock, so, I tried D-mannose, which, as I said, did nothing for me. I, then, tried Cranberry Benefits, which worked well. I switched to CranRich because it's cheaper and doesn't have vitamin-C added. I prefer not to take anything I don't need.

Regardless of research, only you know how your body feels and what it responds to.  CR and CB are a very inexpensive and safe experiment for you to try. You have nothing to lose. I know how lousy UTIs feel. You have to cure it with meds and take concentrated cranberry pills prophylactically and as maintenance. Make sure your doctor sees no contraindications for you.
