Question about Smell in Andrew Lessman Vitamins

I had a large container of the multiple vitamins both for women and men, only about six months old and they are in individual sealed envelopes. When I opened up the container the smell was horrible and when I actually opened up the envelopes the smell was horrendous. I threw the whole thing out. Is this normal? Are they supposed to stink like this? I was actually gagging from the stink.
