Taking "herbs," aka unregulated meds, is simply gambling with your health. Someday, hopefully, the entire supplement industry will be regulated in this country. Until then, I'm going with what I can verify on the basis of clinical studies.
I so agree. The only "supplement" I use is Melatonin for insomnia and my Primary Care Doctor suggested that I use it. Its not worth the gamble. There is a reason a medical doctor goes to post-graduate school so many years, does an internship, does a residency. I have full confidence that my doctors are giving me good advice, altho I have to admit, I don't run to specialists all the time. Only when necessary.

@SeaMaiden wrote:@excpa How interesting! I totally agree with you how doctors start piling up drug after drug, to offset sift effects caused by another drug..... I think a lot of people die from this culture of using lots of drugs and not addressing the real issues.
I think that is true.
But I also know that some medications keep people alive.
Why would you even ask people if they take meds and how many?

On the issue of supplements. In my nursing days many patients would ask one of the physicians I worked with about otc supplements. He would always advise not taking any because many contain amphetamines.
Just an observation of those who have lived a long life. Most of the patients and family members that I observed, who lived well into their nineties/one hundred, did not take prescription meds. They were fortunate to be blessed with good genes and probably a healthy lifestyle.*
I do take 4 prescriptions meds.
*Edited to clarify a previous statement that was not clearly stated.

Absolutely false. I have a mother in her 90s who is on several Rx meds. She needs them, she takes them, and so do many anciennes.
Let's stop promulgating this line of thinking. There is nothing virtuous about not needing medication, there is nothing laudatory about not taking medication if you need it, and we really need to stop with the self-promotions for the benefits given us by the one who cannot be named on these forums. Enough!

from the FDA website
Are dietary supplements approved by FDA?
No. Dietary supplement manufacturers and distributors are not required to obtain approval from FDA before marketing dietary supplements. Before a firm markets a dietary supplement, the firm is responsible for ensuring that

@noodleann You overreacted to my statement. I said it was my observation. That was based on years of nursing and family members. That does not mean everyone who lives a long life does not take meds. Obviously I do not promote not taking prescription meds. I said I take 4.
